Possible Drug-Herb Interactions between Merunggai (Moringa Oleifera) Standardized Extracts with Antihypertensive Agents.

  • Little is known about drug-herb interactions of conventional cardiovascular drugs with most Malaysian herbs. The study focus is on the possible interactions of Moringa oleifera with antihypertensive agents. The findings are crucial in ensuring the safe use of M. oleifera and hence supporting the development of M. oleifera as herbal supplements.

Elucidation of lipid-lowering effect of Gynura procumbens and its active compounds on low density lipoprotein receptor activity and molecular signaling in vitro and in vivo.

  • Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the main cause of mortality and morbidity in elderly in Malaysia. Hyperlipidaemia is known to be one of the major risk factors for CVD. Reducing low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level is associated with reduce risk of CVD. It is evident that Gynura procumbens extract may possess lipid-lowering activity but the mechanism is not well explored. This study aims to investigate the lipid-lowering mechanism of G. procumbens leave extract and its active compounds in vitro and in vivo.

Effects of standardized extract of Christia vespertilionis and it bioactive compounds on proatherogenic markers and Atherosclerotic plaque formation in vitro and in vivo.

  • Atherosclerosis is the underlying reason for nearly all causes of coronary artery disease and many cases of stroke. The disease is characterized by chronic inflammation of the arterial wall due to chemokine-driven mononuclear cell recruitment. Christia vespertilionis has been used traditionally to treat various ailments including infectious and inflammatory diseases. Pharmacological studies have indicated that C. vespertilionis has anti-microbial and anti-cancer activities. However, the the atheroprotective effect of C. vespertilionis has not been elucidated. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of standardized ethanolic extract of C. vespertilionis leaves and its chemical constituents on proatherogenic markers and plaque formation in cell culture and/or atherosclerotic animal models.

Potential use of soursop leaves and their annonaceous Acetogenin compounds as immunomodulating agents by modulating the innate and adaptive immune responses.

  • The present study is aimed to investigate the immunomodulatory effects of the standardized 80% ethanol extract of soursop (Annona muricata) leaves and its chemical markers on innate and adaptive immune responses, and to develop a herbal formulation containing the standardized extract as an immunomodulating agent.
