Doctor of Philosophy in Economics

The ambit of the doctoral programme in economics is to produce highly skilled economists capable of generating and disseminating knowledgein the field of economics. Taught courses, accompanied by either a thesis or a dissertation, will prepare candidates for in the field of economics. Taught courses, accompanied by either a thesis or a dissertation, will prepare candidates for future scientific research in the field of economics. The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Economics) is therefore representative of the scope and depthof knowledge attained by the candidate, as well as the ability of the candidate to perform research in a specialized field.

Programme Goals

The goals of the programme are produce graduates that:

  1. possess a depth of knowledge and a wide range of skills in the field of Economics;
  2. possess an expanded competency and understanding of the selected area(s) of study; and
  3. are professional and ethical in fulfilling their responsibility to God and society.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the programme, graduates should be able to:

  1. demonstrate a systematic and in-depth understanding of economics;
  2. produce, develop, implement and apply research methodologies in a constructive manner;
  3. undertake research that yields original contributions and expands upon existing knowledge in the field of economics through the publication and defence of studies that reflect international standards and practices;
  4. critically analyse, evaluate and synthesize new and complex ideas;
  5. effectively communicate ideas relating to the field of economics to peers within the field of study and to the general public; and
  6. disseminate research in the context of the knowledge society.

Admission Requirements

Entry requirements are as follows:

  1. Master of Economics or any higher learning institution recognized by the UKM Senate; or
  2. Other qualification(s) equivalent to a Master of Economics from UKM of any higher learning institution recognized by the UKM Senate; and
  3. fulfills other requirements prescribed by the programme or Faculty;
  4. An international candidate from a country that are not using English as official language shall obtain a minimum TOEFL score of 550 or IELTS band 6 or other english proficiency examination recognized by the UKM Senate.

Type of Registration and Period of Study

  1. Full time studies (eight (8) to twelve (12) semesters)*
  2. Part time studies (ten (10) to fourteen (14) semesters)*

*All courses will be conducted on weekdays and during working hours.

Programme Structure

  1. Candidates must successtully complete the following components:
    Core Courses 20 credits
    Compulsary Modules Courses 12 credits
    Comprehensive Examinination
    Dissertation 28 credits
  2. The candidates must successfully complete three (3) comprehensive examinations in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and one (1) in area of specialization;
  3. The candidates must present and pass his research proposal;
  4. The candidates must present and pass his dissertation oral examination; and
  5. Candidates are also required to publish at least one (1) article in an indexed journal and at least one (1) article in a proceeding from a seminar/ conference/ workshop publish that approved by the Graduate Study Committee of the Faculty.

Requirements for Conferment of Degree

Requirements for Conferment of Degree are as follows:

  1. Pass all the required core courses with a final CGPA of ≥ 3.00;
  2. Successfully complete the required number of kredits for the programme;
  3. Pass the dissertation oral examination;
  4. Fullfils the publication requried ; and
  5. Fulfills any other conditions prescribed by the University
