Biography:
Dr Shahrul Mizan Bin Ismail is an Associate Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law, National University of Malaysia (UKM) in Selangor, Malaysia. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in 2003. In 2004, he was called to the Malaysian Bar and was admitted as Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya. He later continued his studies at the postgraduate level at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, and obtained his Master of Laws (LL.M) specializing in International Human Rights Law and International Criminal Justice & Armed Conflict (minor specialization) in 2006. In 2013, Dr Shahrul Mizan obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in Law (PhD) from National University of Malaysia (UKM), specializing once again in the field of International Human Rights Law.  Dr Shahrul Mizan has two main areas of specialization which are; International Human Rights Law and Civil Procedure. He is the author to several reference books for Civil Procedure such as ‘The International Encyclopedia of Law for Civil Procedure in Malaysia’ published by Kluwer Law International, ‘Civil Procedure in Malaysia: Questions & Answers’ and ‘Civil Litigation in Malaysia: A Practical Guide to Drafting Pleadings’, both of which are published by International Law Book Services (ILBS).  In the field of Human Rights, Dr Shahrul Mizan is actively involved in round table discussions, giving public lectures and workshops, and has also written numerous articles and conference papers on various areas and issues of Human Rights such as Islam & Human Rights, Universalism & Relativism, Criminal Justice & Criminal Justice System, Sustainable Development etc. Notably, in December 2015, he was invited by the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to give a seminar in conjunction with the Human Rights Day on the topic of Sustainable Development and Human Rights. Currently, Dr Shahrul Mizan lectures “Civil Procedure” at the undergraduate level, and at the postgraduate level, he teaches International Human Rights Law. He has been invited as a visiting professor several times in universities outside Malaysia such as The Na as was also invited as a Visiting Professor by the Thompson Rivers University, Canada, and offered to conduct 2 subjects, i.e. (a) Comparative Western Human Rights Law and Islamic Law; and (b) Comparative Law: Islamic Law.  Dr Shahrul Mizan was also involved as an expert in the Malaysia’s National Human Right Action Plan (NHRAP) and Malaysia’s Syariah Index in 2015, both under the Malaysian Prime Minister’s Department. He is currently the advisor for the Malaysia’s Department of National Unity & Integration under the Prime Minister’s Department with regards to the International Covenant on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) Taskforce.    CV 1 Assoc.
