International Women’s Day Initiative in the Land Public Transport Industry (SPAD)

20 February 2018: This is special announcement from Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat Malaysia (SPAD):-

Greetings from SPAD!

In conjunction with International Women’s Day 2018 which falls on 8th March, SPAD alongside several LPT Operators will carry out an initiative with YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri which will involve female professionals in the Land Public Transport industry.

We would like to invite your female students studying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) who are interested to participate in this event. The details of the event is as below:

Proposed event concept:

In a world of disruption where people are struggling to learn as fast as technology is changing, Malaysia is bracing itself for the impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution will have on our economy and the way we currently work and play. Against this background, the number of Malaysian female students studying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects remains alarmingly low[1]. There needs to be a radical rethink about how to motivate female students to study STEM subjects with concrete and effective measures critically required to reduce the tremendous  gender disparity in the STEM space because a diverse workforce is critical to ensure societal harmony.

With Malaysia undergoing rapid development and undertaking massive investment in rail infrastructure projects[2] and with the land public transport sector accelerating the creation of approximately 100,000 technical and high skilled engineering jobs with opportunities in complex, cutting-edge projects, concerted efforts need to be taken now to increase the number of female students choosing a career in STEM.

The theme of International Women’s Day 2018, #PressForProgress, highlights this very urgent need with concrete action plans required to reach an equilibrium in both the education system and the workplace.

It is thus proposed that YB Dato’ Sri Hajjah Nancy Shukri announce at this event that one measure the government is undertaking to get more girls interested in a career in the public transport space is by offering them an internship with a company in the public transport sector (SPAD, ERL, Prasarana, MRT Co, KTMB, MRL). This special internship programme would be offered to girls currently studying STEM subjects in universities who would be interested to consider a future career in the public transport space.

This internship programme would be rolled out throughout the entire 2018, allowing YB Minister to report back at the International Women’s Day 2019 celebration about the impact this initiative had on both the individual girls who had participated in the internship programme as well as the companies that had participated in the internship programme. Ideally, this initiative can be extended in the future to girls in secondary school to encourage them to study STEM-related subjects, and thereafter institutionalise the internship programme to be carried out on an annual basis to motivate girls to consider a career in the public transport space.
