The latest branch of Finance - Islamic Finance has recorded phenomenal growth and development over recent years. From humble beginnings, Islamic Finance has carved a niche for itself in the financial industry leading to even established global financial centres, which are non-traditional markets for Islamic Finance such as an London and Singapore, jumping on the bandwagon to become Islamic Financial Centres. Malaysia has been pivotal in the development of the Islamic Finance and Banking industry and to ensure Malaysia retain her position as the leading Global Islamic Finance Financial Centre, the Malaysian Islamic Finance and Banking industry need to continuously innovate and introduce new initiatives.

For this series, three contemporary topics are featured in the Executive Development Programme(EDP) as part of the Islamic Finance Competency, namely :

Exploring Islamic Capital Market

Provides participants with an understanding of the Islamic Capital Market as practiced in Malaysia and globally. Participants will be guided through the concepts of Islamic Capital Markets and accordingly introduced to the respective markets as available in Malaysia. Participants will be introduced to concepts such as security valuation techniques which enable investors to adopt investment strategies in line with investor’s risks / returns objectives.

Introduction to Sukuk

This programme provides a solid grounding in Sukuk Origination and Structure. From basic principles of Islamic financing and local Sukuk, the Programme will explore the varieties of International Sukuk, covering topics such as structures, term sheets and outline the legal documentation requirements culminating in examination of the latest Sukuk rulings and overview of the issues in Sukuk defaults.

Takaful Products

A programme which exposes to the basic concepts of Takaful, the Shariah principles behind Takaful, its early history and recent developments leading to Takaful being recognized as a modern and mainstream financial product. This Executive Education Programme (EDP) will also discuss the developments of various Takaful Models and its differentiation vis a vis Conventional Insurance in key areas relating to Business Development such as Agency Business and Bank Assurance as well as the areas of Product Development and Underwriting.

Exploring Islamic Capital Market

Experienced business, financial and human capital development consultant with extensive exposure in the Malaysian business and financial services industry. Helmy has more than 20 years of experience in consumer and commercial banking in the areas of credit and marketing as well as operations and systems. He was formerly an Examiner with Institut Bank-Bank Malaysia (IBBM) for the Certified Credit Professional (CCP) Programme. In addition to lecturing in Marketing, Islamic Banking and Finance at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Graduate School of Business, Helmy also conduct training courses for entrepreneurs, business owners and employees of Small and Medium Entreprises (SMEs) and Cooperatives as well as staff of Financial Institutions (FIs).

Introduction to Sukuk

Holders of a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from University of Exeter, United Kingdom (UK). Zahid joined the international Accounting Firm, Arthur Young & Co at its London office upon his graduation in 1977. Subsequently Zahid returned to Malaysia and joined Arab Malaysian Merchant Bank (Kuala Lumpur) in 1982, after which Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad(BIMB) in 1990. At BIMB, he pioneered the development of Islamic Corporate Banking and his last position was as the Senior Manager, Corporate Financing Department. In September 2000, Zahid formed a firm specialised in training and arranging of Islamic financing which was acknowledged as a Securities Commissioner (SC) approved Syariah Adviser for Sukuk. Between July 2006 and March 2009 Zahid was based in Riyadh as Head of Investment Banking & Sukuk Origination for Al Bilad Investment Company Ltd, a CMA licensed and wholly owned subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Bank Al Bilad. In April 2009 he returned to Malaysia to resume his position as a financial consultant.

Takaful Products

Attached with the Maybank Group of Companies over the last 16 years. Rudy is currently reporting to The Group CEO of Maybank Ageas Holding Bhd and CEO Etiqa Takaful Bhd and CEO Etiqa Insurance Bhd. As a member Etiqa’s Senior Management Committee (SMC), Rudy is responsible in developing the business strategic directions for both the Takaful and Insurance business of the Group. At Etiqa, Rudy’s role is to ensure and drive the development of Takaful Business in Malaysia and ASEAN countries including undertaking the transformation programme of Takaful in Malaysia in term of market share, consumer segmentations, products and services as well as performance management. Rudy also work closely with the regulators at Bank Negara Malaysia and Malaysian Takaful Association in promoting Takaful among the public, academicians, market players and investors.
