The Conference

The Graduate School of Business (GSB) of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is proud to present the conference Managing the Future: Capitalising on Globalisation.

Organised by the Academy of Leadership And Management (ALAM) of UKM-GSB, this Conference is a module under the Leadership Development Programme (LDP) of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) Programme. The learning outcomes of the LDP include, amongst others, development of competent and effective leaders by exploring key leadership and management theories in the context of practical skills required to succeed in today’s performance driven job market.

Managing The Future: Capitalising on Globalisation

Over the past decades, Malaysia has achieved significantly in economic and social progress especially due to Malaysia’s embracement of globalization. Globalization offers limitless opportunities for a truly worldwide development by having more access to capital, technology, cheaper imports, and larger export markets.

As for Malaysia, the journey to become a high-income nation that is both inclusive and sustainable by 2020 and beyond is still at critical points in the economic development. Even though "globalization or limitless boundaries” have been considered as the key to future world economic development, some misapprehension remains in that it increases economic disparity within and between nations, creates underemployment, threatens local cultures, and brings many social upheavals.
The measures to achieve high-income status must be sustainable in both socio-economic and environmental terms, meeting present needs without compromising those of future generations. In an increasingly competitive global economy, it is more difficult to generate high rates of economic growth. Growth can no longer be taken for granted, but needs to be earned. It is also about Malaysia becoming an advanced, developed nation with an economy possessing the characteristics that are common to developed nations whilst maintaining its cultural identity of a sovereign nation.
“Managing The Future: Beyond Globalization” will address the limitless opportunities, as well as myriads of challenges bring forth by the dynamism of globalisation for Malaysia in her journey towards becoming a high-income nation.

The Aims

• To provide economic and business insight into what lies ahead in the future in terms of risks and opportunities.
• To understand the challenges and capitalise on the opportunities for growth and development afforded by the world of globalised markets while at the same time minimising the risks.
• To develop the capacity to adapt for sustainable growth and stability in a rapidly changing globalised marketplace.
