The Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS), established on 1 April 1995, is a centre for research in the social sciences within Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The Institute which adopts a multidisciplinary perspective conducts research, post-graduate teaching and other academic activities. Staffed by a team of scholars from various disciplines (especially economics, sociology, political science and history), IKMAS is devoted to Malaysian and International Studies within the framework of globalisation and social transformation.

 

Vision

To be a centre of research excellence at the frontiers of knowledge for Malaysian and International Studies, focusing on globalization and social transformation from the perspective of developing countries.

 

Mission

To establish IKMAS as a national and globally reputable research institute and reference centre for multidisciplinary research on Malaysia and Malaysia’s relations with the globalizing world as well as the globalizing world’s impact of Malaysia.

 

Educational Goals of IKMAS:

  • To conduct basic, applied and strategic research including policy input, that is beneficial to society;
  • To build human capital through post-graduate studies;
  • To promote collaborative research and dialogue on various themes of mutual interest with scholars and institutions in Malaysia and other parts of the world;
  • To contribute to the discourse on globalization and social transformation from the perspective of developing nations;
  • To advance the spirit of independent scholarship through its various activities.
