Abstract

On 2010, KETTHA has announced its planning to have nuclear power by 2021/2022, and PEMANDU have initiated Malaysian Nuclear Power Corporation (MNPC) in January 2011. The plan was delayed by opposition following the Fukushima incident, but the Malaysian government has recently revived the project. The issues surrounding this topic have been overlooked for the most part, even by Malaysian academics. I will start this talk by discussing the national energy outlook, it demands, and challenges in the present and future, which will then be followed by an assessment of most alternative energies, including nuclear power. I will discuss the latest development in nuclear power, not only in terms of  technologies but also encompassing policy formation, implementation, and enforcement; with an eye to experiences from the UK and Europe. I will then connect these observations to what is feasible in Malaysia while acknowledging the challenges.
