RA/GRA Project Graphene based Pressure Sensor device

Development of Graphene membrane for ultra-sensitive NEMS pressure sensor and nanophone.

Objective: To develop bio-compatible high sensitivity pressure sensor for bio-medical applications

Description:

Nano-electromechanical systems (NEMS) pressure sensor based on piezoresitive effect of graphene provide fast improvements over existing sensing methods for bio-medical due to its extreme stiffness with young modulus of 1 TPa, excellent electrical conductivity compared to other metal conductor materials, super flexibility and up to 20% stretch ability improving in reduction in energy consumption, device reliability, improved longevity and enhanced device sensitivity. In this project we develop pressure sensor implementing suspended graphene based membrane as sensing element that will have its potential application in health monitoring system and nano-Microphone implanted in trachea (vocal fold).

The primary objective of the project is to investigate the mechanical and electrical properties of graphene material for pressure sensing purposes. The sensor is expected to have orders of magnitude higher sensitivity per unit area when compared to conventional pressure sensor.
