Capacity building Workshop at UNIMAS, 30 July 2018

KITA Principal Fellow Prof. Datuk Dr. Denison Jayasooria was invited to the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSS) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in Kota Samarahan to conduct a capability building workshop on the theme of the role of academicians in public advocacy work. The workshop was attended by over 20 lectures and post graduate students on Monday July 30, 2018 from 8.30am till 1.30pm at the FSS Building on the UNIMAS campus. The session was moderated by FSS Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Neilson Ilan Mersat and assisted by Dr. Arnold Puyok. Former dean Prof Dr Spencer Empading Sanggin also participated.

In the workshop Prof. Denison focused on developing the idea of advocacy and public intellectuals based on six academics such as John Rawls, Jurgen Habermas, Amartya Sen, Romila Thapar and two Malaysian intellectuals such as Syed Hussein Alatas and Shamsul Amri Baharuddin. Denison based his presentation on his earlier publication entitled Public Advocacy: Of Ideas & Practice in Malaysia (2017).
