Retirement Announcement, 6 September 2019

After 34 years of dedicated service to UKM, KITA Principal Fellow Prof. Dr. Ong Puay Liu, has set her sights on a well-deserved retirement.

Prof. Ong began her career as a Tutor at Faculty of Development Science (Fakulti Sains Pembangunan, FSP) in 1985 and afterward at Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, after the merger of the two faculties in 2001. On 15 April 2008, she joined the newly established Institute of Ethnic Studies as KITA’s very first Deputy Director – the post she held for five years. She relinquished the post to go for a final sabbatical leave before her retirement. True to her down-to-earth personality, her last working day on 6 September 2019 came and went with little fanfare as per her request.

Prof. Ong has been an integral part of KITA for the last eleven years since its establishment. The entire KITA community has benefitted from Prof. Ong’s commitment and passion for both researching and teaching where she is known for going the extra mile for her students and colleagues in KITA, UKM and beyond, particularly in her areas of specialization in anthropology of development and causes that were close to her heart, viz., education for the minority groups and cultural heritage.

KITA wishes Prof. Dr. Ong Puay Liu all the best in her retirement.
