RERE6022 Pemikiran Sosial Tentang Kajian Etnik

RERE6022 Social Thoughts on Ethnic Studies

Sinopsis Kursus | Course Synopsis

This course examines the theory and concepts that are pertinent to understanding ethnic formation, ethnic identity and the development of ethnic community and race in Malaysia and other countries. The course centers on why and how humans organise differences, create social categories for differences, and the importance of these social categories once they are created in people’s lives. The discussions will focus on ethnicity/ethnic groups as one of the main social categories that are created to characterise difference among humans, apart from class, religion, gender, education, political affiliation, residence and so on. The focus of the discussions will also be on the interaction between ethnicity with other social categories, as well as the impact of these interactions on everyday life, especially in a plural society like Malaysia. The contribution of ethnic studies in construction theory will also be given attention. The discussions will be accompanied by empirical examples.
