From the Director

Assalamualaikum and Greetings!

LESTARI is now approaching its 19th year of establishment and the year 2013 would be one of the most important milestones since the inception. As a Potential Higher Education Centre of Excellence, LESTARI is spreading its wings wide across the globe in the context of research and education as well as in professional training and policy consultation on matters regarding environment and development.

This was evidenced through the success of the International Workshop on Sustainability Science held in Kuala Lumpur in April 2013. The event was co-organised by UNESCO and LESTARI, and has sparked local, regional and international interest and appreciation towards the development of this new discipline. Sustainability Science has been the thrust of LESTARI’s research and education programs and has now transformed into the application for sustainable resource management, climate change adaptation and sustainable development.

Research and professional networks are further strengthened and more local and international research grants are secured by fellow researchers at LESTARI in the first quarter of 2013. These are some of the achievements addressed in this edition of our e-Bulletin in addition to the updates of our core businesses.

The global political and economic scenario has taken the world to a more challenging and pressing dilemma in terms of environmental and social integrity. This at the same time has become the critical points to be addressed through our institutional research and educational programs. Thus, I pray and I wish the best for all LESTARIans through their research works to come up with more outstanding outputs and breakthrough findings. And to all readers and friends of LESTARI, I wish you all a great year ahead.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Mazlin Mokhtar
