From the Director

Salam and Greetings!
"Time and tide wait for none." Indeed, the year 2012 has moved on swiftly for all us, especially for us at LESTARI as we strive to fulfill promised milestones. This second e-bulletin recapped events and activities that took place from January to May 2012.

In this edition, LESTARIANs at UKM and partners and associates from all over, are indeed very happy for Prof Dato’ Dr. Ibrahim Komoo, the first LESTARIAN ever to be appointed as a Vice-Chancellor! We also would like to congratulate Dr. Goh Choo Ta for his appointment as the Head of Ecosystem Health, Langkawi Research Centre (PPL). Many thanks to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saiful Arif Abdullah for his contribution during his 5 years service as the Head of Quality Assurance. We welcome Dr. Ahmad Aldrie Amir for being appointed as the new successor of Head of Quality Assurance starting May 2012.

Among the highlights of LESTARI events and activities are the training courses conducted on ‘National Water Watch Programme for Young Leaders’ and ‘Southeast Asia Regional Training for Trainers: Managing pollution in IWRM’. These training courses are part of the strategies to achieve our aspiration to be a renowned Centre of Excellence in research and training on matters pertaining to environment and development in the Asia Pacific region. We also participated in the 1st Comprehensive Seminar of ‘Research and Education Center for the Risk Based Asian Oriented Integrated Watershed Management’ held in Kyoto University, Japan. The seminar was part of the JSPS Asian Core Programme, collaboration between the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) , Malaysia.

We are also pleased to share with you our latest book, a compilation of proceeding papers from RIMBA 2: Regional Sustainable Development in Malaysia and Australia Symposium, which was held in Langkawi Geopark, 2010. This publication is part of the initiatives stemmed from the tripartite MoU signed between UKM, UNIMAS and CDU.

Our recent recognition as one of the Potential Centres of Excellence 2011 by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) is both a blessing and a challenge at the same time. There are eight identified research projects to boost LESTARI’s performance to hopefully gain its full status as Centre of Excellence in 2014. These projects, commenced in April 2012 and expected completion in December 2013, are closely linked with the objectives and activities of our main Research Centres (SGK, KASES and PPL). I thank you for your interest in our organization and encourage you to learn more by surfing our site, visiting the Institute, emailing or calling us.

Best regards,

Mazlin Mokhtar
