From the Director

Salam and Greetings!
Welcome to the Third Edition of eBuletin of LESTARI.

Kudos and a pat on the back for another job well done to the hard working team of the eBulletin! Congratulations and "Happy 18th Birthday" to LESTARI on last 1 October 2012!! Our institute is currently a Potential Centre of Excellence for Multidisciplinary Research and Training on Sustainable Development and Sustainability; under the framework of Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia.

Every year since 1998, i.e four years after our official establishment on 1st October 1994, LESTARI graduates a number of talented students who go on to pursue careers in government, industry, NGOs and CBOs, and who continuosly contribute to the well being and betterment of livelihoods of community at various scales. We celebrate this October 20-24, 2012 the convocation of seven more PhD graduates of LESTARI, and five more Master graduates. Congratulations to all fellows of LESTARI who had expeditiously and dilligently supervised and guided these graduates via meaningful research endeavours over the years. We would like to believe that the several teams of researchers comprising the experienced and credible fellows; with the dedicated junior fellows and officers had brought great benefits to the students and graduates, and the communities that they are serving. We really hope that the active communication will carry on in strengthening and forming lasting bonds via the human networks at many levels and scales.

At this year's 40th anniversary of UKM's Convocation Ceremonies, we shall also celebrate the Emeritus Professorship Award to our former Founding Associate Director (1994-1998) and Founding Deputy Director (1997-1998), and our Former Director (1999-2001; 2003-2004) YBhg Prof Dato' Dr Ibrahim Komoo. We salute his examplary dedication and glorious achievement over the decades, including his intellectual gifts in making science relatively easier to be understood for the benefit of man. We also congratulate and celebrate the achievements of all fellows, students and associates of LESTARI these past several months who had continued to shine and glitter through their leadership and paticipation all over the world by winning competetive research grants, invited as keynote and notable speakers/ panelists  and working with the special groups for peoples in search of better quality of lives in several corridors and niches of development.

LESTARI shall continue with the aim to carry out effective research and by building network of prestigious teams and institutions across Malaysia; the Asia Pacific, and beyonf. We shall continue to seek oppurtunities and greener pathways in preparing individuals and group of thoughful and concerned leaders and team palyers in facing many challenges in this fact changing world and ecosystems. We shall aspire to innovatively become a significant and growing force in helping regions  and countries in meeting the respective obligatons, and in developing capacities and capabilities to be wiser in our journeys towards sustainable development. Hope you will enjoy reading this eBulletin. We welcome very much your continuing support, cooperation and colaboration.

The signing of  Memorandum of Understanding  (MoU) between UKM with Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) and Underwater World Langkawi (UWL)

LESTARI had organised an event to celebrate the signing of two Memorandum of Understanding  (MoU) between UKM with Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) and Underwater World Langkawi (UWL) at Langkawi Research Centre (PPL) on 4 June 2012. We hope that through these MoUs, the established research and expertise network will be further strengthened. In conjunction with the ceremony, Director of LESTARI accompanied by PPL’s staff visited UWL on 7th June 2012


Langkawi Geopark Management Plan Focus Groups Discussion

On 10-11 June of 2012, UKM and Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) had organised a discussion between Focus Groups on Langkawi Geopark Management Plan in LADA Hall. The work on establishment of  Langkawi Geopark Management Plan is lead by  Datin Paduka Dr. Halimaton Saadiah Hashim and involved by others researchers from UKM, aimed in providing a guideline in sustainable management of geopark focusing on all the heritage, socio economic impact and knowledge transfer activities. The discussion was participated by more than 60 participants from various sectors and stakeholders.

Official Visit of LESTARI to Danum Valley Field Centre, Sabah

LESTARI and Centre for Research and Instrumentation Management (CRIM) had visited the Danum Valley Field Centre, Sabah on 14 – 16 June 2012. The delegates was led by  Y.Bhg. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Rahmah Mohamed, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation Affairs), UKM. The aim of the visit is to observe management practices, facilities, researches, and potential collaboration research between both parties in the future

 

Green Environment Carnival in conjunction with World Environment Day 2012 Celebration

On 17th June 2012, the Green Environment Carnival was celebrated in Taman Tasik Cempaka, Bandar Baru Bangi which includes cycling activity. The event was co-organized by LESTARI with Department of Environment Selangor, Kajang Local Authority (MPKj) and CANON. The activity was participated by more than 280 cyclers and aimed in promoting healthy lifestyle among the people.

 


Official Visit from Centre of Socioeconomic Development (CSD), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT)

 

 

Centre of Socioeconomic Development (CSD), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) had visited LESTARI on 2nd July 2012 in efforts of positive discussion for strategic planning of the centre and to understand the excellence working culture in other institutions of higher learning.

 

 

LESTARI Doctoral and Knowledge Transfer Workshop "Knowledge for Sustainable Development in Malaysia"

On 9th – 11th July 2012, LESTARI has organized the LESTARI Workshop: Knowledge for Implementing Sustainable Development in Malaysia which was conducted by LESTARI Adjunct Professor, Prof. Roderick Lawrance from University of Geneva, held at Danau Golf Club, UKM. The main objective of the three days workshop was to improve Malaysian knowledge in promoting sustainable development concept and principles for national development planning. More than 30 participants from various government agencies, academicians, NGOs , private sector and post graduates attended the workshop to share experiences and knowledge on the subject matter.

Visit Of Duta Ecuador , Lourdes Puma Puma

 

On 10th of July 2012, the Ambassador of Ecuador, Lourdes Puma Puma has visited LESTARI for an opportunity to explore potential research collaboration with LESTARI. LESTARIan are grateful to spent two hours of a fruitful discussion pertaining to possible research networking between LESTARI and Ecuador.

 


Exhibition At The Pre-Launch Of World Habitat Day 2012 Ceremony

LESTARI was invited to participate in the exhibition held in conjunction with The Pre-Launch Of World Habitat Day 2012 Ceremony on 17 July 2012 in Kuala Lumpur. The event was organized by Ministry of Housing and Local Government as part of activities in celebration of 2012 World Habitat Day promoted by United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat)

Rio+20 and Beyond: International Trade Issues

 

 

Taking the spirit of the Rio+20 agenda in the year 2012, LESTARI had organized the  Rio+20 and Beyond: International Trade Issues round table dialogue on 17 July 2012. The dialogue had been a successful discussion between various stakeholders involving in the international trade issues.



Research Innovation for Malaysian Peninsular, Borneo and Australia (RIMBA 3)

In continuation of the RIMBA initiatives between UKM, UNIMAS and Charles Darwin University, the symposium of RIMBA3 was organized on 17-18 Julai 2012 in Permai Rainforest Resort,Sarawak. RIMBA3 was officiated by YB Dato Dr James Dawos Mamit, Deputy Minister of Tourism Malaysia (and Honorary Fellow of LESTARI) and followed by various paper presentation from the three universities on the theme of “Sustaining Livelihood through Prudent Utilization and Management of Natural Resources”.


Visit by Prof Pak. Sum Low,  UKM-Sime Darby's Chair on Climate Change

On Friday 20 July 2012 Professor Pak Sum Low, the holder of UKM-Sime Darby's Chair on Climate Change, had visited LESTARI, UKM from 1030am to 1pm. Prof Pak was briefed on some of the aspirations and achievements of LESTARI by Prof Mazlin Mokhtar, the Director of LESTARI. Prof Pak also enjoyed the updates and pathway forward of LESTARIans' via research initiatives which include presentations on mangrove ecosystems by Dr Ahmad Aldrie Amir; on Geoparks and geotourism by Dr Tanot Unjah; and Livable Cities and Sustainable Livelihoods by Assoc Prof A Hadi Harman Shah. Prof Pak and all Lestarians look forward to a continuing and meaningful research collaboration for a sustainable Malaysia. 

2nd Workshop of Regional Sustainable Development (PLW) Niche 2012

 

 

The second workshop for PLW had been held in LESTARI on 13 August 2012. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mazlin Bin Mokhtar and joined by members of the niche. Various matters pertaining to the niche had been discussed and shared for the benefits of all.

 

 

Malaysia ILBM-ILEC Consultative Forum

LESTARI and Perbadanan Putrajaya had conducted the Malaysia ILBM-ILEC Consultative Forum on the 3rd September 2012 in Putrajaya. The forum was given by Prof. M. Nakamura from Shiga University, Japan on the subject of Integrated Lake Basin Management (ILBM). Experiences of Japanese scientist were shared with all the participants.

National Workshop on Sustainable Rice Production: Revisiting IPM

UKM through LESTARI and collaboration with UPM and other partners had successfully conducted the National Workshop on Sustainable Rice Production: Revisiting IPM on 12-13th September 2012 in UKM. The workshop aim to explore means of optimizing the cost of rice production towards sustainable food security (reducing costs, as a result of early detection and management of biosecurity risks and water saving practices; mitigating loss and damage from pest incursions).

Green Leader Student Leaders Workshop

On 7-9th September 2012, LESTARI extended its commitment with NGOs through the collaboration with Yayasan Anak Warisan Alam (YAWA) in organizing the Green Leader Student Leaders Workshop in Perak. The event was joined by school students and conducted as part of the continuous process in educating younger generation about the environment.

Briefing and Induction for LESTARI’s Postgraduates of Semester 1 2012/2013

LESTARI had conducted a briefing and induction session for all the postgraduates of Semester 1 2012/2013 on 10 September 2012. The event welcomes 11 new postgraduate students and all the students into the start of the new semester of the session. The event was officiated by Prof. Dr. Mazlin Bin Mokhtar, the Director of LESTARI and participated by other fellows and staff of LESTARI.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebration of 2012

 

 

 

On 11th September 2012, LESTARI had celebrated the festive season of Hari Raya Aidilfitri of 2012 and all LESTARIans was invited. The celebration was conducted promotes sharing among the LESTARIans through the concept of pot luck celebration.

 

Workshop on Strategic Planning ofResearch Centre for Sustainability Science and Governance (SGK)

LESTARI’s Research Centre for Sustainability Science and Governance (SGK) had organized a workshop for strategic planning on 18 September 2012 in Putrajaya. The workshop was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mazlin Bin Mokhtar, the Chair of SGK and participated by researchers of LESTARI in addressing the plans and needs of the centre for the future.
