Abstract

X-ray flourencence technique (XRF) was employed to determine the Al, Ca, Cl, Fe, K, Mg and Zn content in 24 herbal tea samples produced locally or imported. The herbal tea samples analysed are known as slimming tea product which available in the form of leaf, powder, tablet or capsule. The internal standard was used to quantified the elementals content. The concentration range (ppm) of  Al, Ca, Cl, Fe, K, Mg and Zn determined in the samples was found to be  342 - 9734, 7212 - 134713, 1508 -  25995, 390 - 7743, 15494 - 114556, 1717 - 7166, 43 - 2166 and   10 - 89 respectively. In general, the result of analysis showed that there was no significant different of the elementals content between imported or locally produced and also the form of the herbal tea samples (i.e powder or tablet). However, for Zn content,  9 of the herbal tea samples were found to exceed the level allowed by the 1985 Malaysian Food Regulations i.e 40 ppm.
