BANGI, May 11 2016 – Students at universities, including The National University of Malaysia, should be cautious when using online social media so as not to slander others, says the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

Khalid said there are a lot of views shared on social media that have not been authenticated.

“When the content disseminated is not true, it become slander. So, I advise all of you, especially students, please don’t jump the gun if you are not sure if its true,” he said while delivering his speech at the 29th UKM Bicara Persada here recently, titled  National Security: Police and the Community Cooperater.

He explained that the Federal Constitution had guaranteed personal liberties along with safeguards aimed at protecting society which benefits all parties.

He said as the country is multi-racial and multi-creed, whatever we do should not  lead to sedition, slander, embarrassment or threaten national unity.

On the crime rate, he informed that 2015 showed a 10.1 percent decline compared with 2014.

He said many cases had been solved with the setting up of a task force to go after perpetrators of serious crimes. ukmnewsportal-eg
