BANGI, 6 June, 2011 – UKM has disbursed more than RM1.7million of zakat funds it collected to 2661 deserving recipients last year. That was a RM400,000 increase in disbursement compared to 2009.

UKM Treasurer Mohd. Abd. Rashid Mohd Fadzil attributed the increase in disbursement to improving economy and the rising costs faced by students.

Rashid was speaking at a handing over ceremony of zakat from Etika Takaful Berhad (METB) to UKM. A cheque for RM70,000 was presented by METB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shahril Azuar Jimin  to the Vice Chancellor Prof Tan Sri Dato Wira Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin.

At the ceremony the zakat funds were handed out to 20 students by Prof Sharifah Hapsah.

UKM is one of the institution authorised by The Selangor Zakat Board to collect zakat under its Tabung Amanah Zakat UKM (TAZ UKM ) since 2005.

Under the arrangement UKM can collect the zakat and distribute 50 percent of its collection to deserving recipients which include the poor, sick and needy patients in hospitals and students with financial difficulties.

Rashid said that if the culture of helping each other out can be cultivated in every Muslim and UKM members especially, UKM also can be an institution like the Al Azhar University in Egypt  which is funded by zakat and Waqaf and do not need government funds.

METB CEO Sharil Azuar Jimin said that the UKM Zakat Fund is to help those in need. He said a corporate entity needed blessings from Allah and should not only be profit motivated.

Deputy Vice Chancellor ((Students and Alumni Affairs) Professor Dr Ir Othman A. Karim, Representative from  Selangor Zakat Board, students and Senior members of the University were present at the ceremony.
