Biomedical Engineering

INTRODUCTION

A research group was unofficially established in 1998 with available funding for biomedical engineering (BME) related projects and the introduction of additional staff in the same field of research. With UKM’s establishment as a research university in 2007, the group was placed under the Advanced Materials Engineering Cluster of the Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials Niche. In 2008, the Biomedical Engineering (BME) Cluster was formed under the Health and Medical Technology Niche.

The original BME group was transformed into the Medical Devices Research Group under the new BME cluster. Another group was then formed under the BME cluster and named the Biomechanics and Materials for Medical Applications Research Group. The group members of this cluster come from the science, engineering and medical backgrounds. These allow the formulation of joint projects for the development of medical and biomechanical devices. These devices are conceived bearing in mind their potential simple and useful applications in the medical field. Hence the emphases are on non-invasive monitoring and portable instrumentation.

Main activities:
•    Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring using Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Photoplethysmogram (PPG)
•    Instrumentation Based on PPG signal
•    Cardiovascular System Modeling Using PPG signal
•    Automated, interactive Hearing Screening System
•    BRIM Pelvic Binder Refinement
•    Smartbags

Two of these projects have been selected for the Lab2Market (L2M) Commercialization Program led by TiE Malaysia in collaboration with Agensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM), Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd , Technology Park Malaysia and PEMANDU, namely:
•    NIVAR; A Screening Tools for Vascular Risk Assessment and Management – L2M II/A/4
•    Optical Fetal Heart Rate Detection System – L2M II/A/2
