Digital Humanities Research Group

Kumpulan Penyelidikan Kemanusiaan Digital

Ketua Kumpulan: Prof. Madya Dr Pramela Krish

The Digital Humanities group is involved in and committed to promoting multi-disciplinary research on the discursive transition from computing to digital humanities, and in analyzing how this transition affects the humanities disciplines. Research in this cluster involves utilizing, extending and exploring the application of emerging technologies to rethink what humanities is about and how humanities may evolve through their engagement with technology, big data, media and computational tools. The cluster comprises researchers who explore the notions of digital practices, corpus linguistics and digital communication based on various theoretical perspectives and research paradigms, in which new pedagogies and research approaches are made possible by new and innovative technologies.

Researchers in this cluster are involved and will be involved in interdisciplinary collaborations with people across disciplines and backgrounds (academia, industries and practitioners in education) to explore innovations and communication in the humanities discipline as well as exploring and employing the different types of technology tools to expand and shift the research in different languages from various theoretical perspectives and research paradigms.

Research in digital communication  includes building, analyzing and interpreting digitized specialized corpus; digitization, optimization and representation of archival materials in text and graphic or visual forms; exploring human identity through human machine interface and studying discourse behaviour and digital communication. Research involving effective application of technology in teaching and learning, includes Eyetracking, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Mobile Technology and Augmented Reality (AR). The revitalization of humanities no doubt create challenges in how data is distributed, duplicated and accessed. Therefore, the aim of this cluster is to be recognized as one of the Digital Humanities research group (in Malaysia) for engaging in research using technology, computational tools and software, which encourages new forms of interaction such as data management, data mining, mapping and modelling of various types of data (texts, visual or graphics, web based data and mobile platforms), and creating innovations in enhancing teaching and learning. The outcome of these researches will be communicated to the academics, industries and practitioners to make visible scholarly work; digital data in corpus linguistics; digital archival; promote and develop understanding of digital data and environment; expand access to knowledge and provide new insights for policy makers and educational practitioners to construct effective teaching and learning plans in the future.
