Center for Research in Language and Linguistics

The English Language Studies Program at the Centre for Research in Language and Linguistics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (ELS) provides students with knowledge and skills that are in line with the needs and aspirations that are essential for the 4th Industrial Revolution. The program practices integrated learning that combines all aspects of language skills and contents via transformative teaching and learning that are vital in meeting the demands of the job market. ELS students at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels will be able to generate, apply, and share knowledge, and demonstrate their ability to conduct independent research in the field of English language and apply practical and transferable skills through the courses we offer.

At ELS, we encourage our students to explore various aspects of English language studies through research groups and research clusters that are interdisciplinary in nature which are available at our Centre. ELS students are not only enriched with the knowledge of English linguistics and applied linguistics, but they are also provided with opportunities to learn about English literature and translation through the various elective courses that are offered at our Centre. ELS students, beginning the year 2020, will also learn a foreign language of their choice (till the intermediate level) to empower them with additional skills that are needed as potential employees.

Our alumni are in various industries including (and not limited to) education, research, publishing, communication, tourism, finance, and even in oil and gas. This is the result of the quality of excellence that our lecturers uphold in sharing our knowledge and experience with our students and this leverages our ELS students to a level of scholarship that the nation aspires to have.

The program aims to contribute to the development of the nation through the following program educational objectives:

  1. To produce graduates who are able to communicate in English effectively at the local and international arena without compromising their cultural values;
  2. To develop graduates who are professional, relevant, flexible, responsible, and competitive, and who seek knowledge as a lifelong process;
  3. To shape graduates with global viewpoints, who are capable of thinking critically in order to produce, disseminate, and internationalize knowledge (acting with a global set of minds);
  4. To equip graduate with scientific knowledge of the English language who can later contribute their expertise individually or as a team, creatively and innovatively, to meet the needs of the future
