Center for Research in Language and Linguistics

The Postcolonial Literature in English Programme at the Centre for Research in Language and Linguistics is anchored in new and dynamic paradigms intricately blending the study of Malaysian and other New Literature in English along with established Western literary texts The programme especially encourages students and scholars of literature to challenge existing euro-centric theoretical parameters of reading and literary criticism and to engage in the creation of theories and approaches that imbibe and centre Asian aesthetics. The programme prides itself on its diverse capacity in both the teaching of and research into literary studies. The master’s degree offers a range of courses that will provide graduate students with the opportunity to learn and master a variety of critical theories, issues, and approaches in the discipline of literature. At the PhD and MPhil levels, candidates will have the option to pursue one of the many research areas or interests that the academic staff is well versed in. The research areas include (but are not limited to): the postcolonial condition (experience of colonization and its effects), nationhood, multi-ethnic communal engagements, gender relations, social issues in everyday relations, popular culture, revisionism, religion, ideology and identity. The programme also ensures that its scope and vision remain relevant and forward looking in the 21st century digital era by continuously upgrading its courses’ contents and teaching approaches. Special emphasis is therefore paid to the interdisciplinary nature of the programme and the relation between literature and new media. By doing so, the programme hopes to produce graduates who will be able to address the critical issues in the current and future modern world.
