The UKM Graduate Centre Workshop Series 42/2017: How to Formulate the Research Problem: A Methodological Approach

SYNOPSIS OF WORKSHOP
Researchers seems to be confused as to what comprise a problem statement while research methods textbooks have not clarified the matter well. If one wants to solve a problem one must definitely know what the problem is and the weakness of much of our research is that we have failed to take seriously the initial step in research design, that is, formulating the problem. Very often researcher tend to concentrate on precision in methodology and neglect the problem formulation. This Public Lecture is a knowledge sharing session that highlights the importance in understanding the characteristics of the research problem as it is the heart of the research process; and attempts to offer guidelines for formulating and writing the problem statement. Developing a problem statement is an exercise in logic and the guidelines involve a methodological approach which is based on these three steps:
i. To describe the Principle Proposition
ii. To identify the Interacting Proposition (i.e. what we know that contradicts or challenges the principal proposition and justify the need to look at what we know from new directions or lenses)
iii. To set the directions for the inquiry which is the Speculative Proposition.
