Profile and Awards

Prof Dato' Dr Roslan Abd Shukor

Department of Applied Physics

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia

Roslan Abd Shukor obtained his BSc in 1982 and MSc in 1985 in Physics from Northern Illinois University, USA and his PhD in Physics from University of Arkansas, USA in 1991.  He is currently a Professor at the Department of Applied Physics, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.  His field of research is on high temperature superconductivity. He was a Visiting Fellow at the Department of Materials Engineering, Kyoto University (1997), Department of Physics, Princeton University (2003) and Texas A&M University (2008-2009).  He went to Sekolah Teknik Tuanku Jaafar, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan for his high school.

He received a number of awards including the National Young Scientist Award in 1999 and Malaysia Toray Science and Technology Award in 2006.  He also received several research grants including from the Malaysia Toray Science Foundation and Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Italy. He is a fellow of the Malaysian Solid State Science and Technology Society, Academy of Sciences, Malaysia and The Institute of Physics (UK).  He was on the editorial board of several local and international journals including Superconductor Science & Technology, International Journal of Superconductivity, ISESCO Journal of Science and Technology, Jurnal Fizik Malaysia and Solid State Science and Technology.  He was the Editor in Chief for Sains Malaysiana from 2006 to 2013.

His fundamental work on the electrical, magnetic and elastic properties of the copper oxide based materials has shed some light on the electron pairing mechanism in these novel materials.  His research on the fabrication of thallium-based superconductor derivatives also provides a path to search for new superconducting materials.  He has written more than two hundred articles in indexed journals of high impact and several books on superconductivity.  He has also written books and articles on improving writing skills for young researchers and conducted many sessions on scientific writing, and scientific journal management for editors.
