1. Brief

Who we are

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Southeast Asia Disaster Prevention Research Initiative (SEADPRI-UKM), (ms: Pusat Kajian Bencana Asia Tenggara; ch: 东南亚防灾研究中心) comes under the administrative structure of the Institute of Environment and Development (LESTARI) at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. SEADPRI-UKM comprises a team of highly qualified people/academics with a singular goal: to create a bridge between the academic world with its vast body of research and (the decision makers and the private sector who deal directly with) the reality of disaster management and mitigation in this country, and the region. A team with a vision to promote informed decision making based on knowledge.

Mission

  • Conduct holistic research on hazards and disasters at national and regional levels
  • Nurture/Grow human capital and build capacity at national and regional levels, particularly in Southeast Asia
  • Support knowledge-based decision making on climatic, geological and technological hazards

Vision

Leader in innovative research and knowledge sharing on holistic disaster prevention

Objectives

  • Explore and expand knowledge in the fields of climatic, geological and technological hazards
  • Conduct multidisciplinary research programmes in disaster prevention and risk reduction
  • Develop trained human capital in addressing disaster issues for knowledge-based decision making through post-graduate programmes
  • Serve as a focal point on issues related to science and governance for disaster risk reduction in Southeast Asia
