Clinical Fellowship

FELLOWSHIP NEURO-OTOLOGY AND LATERAL SKULL BASE

Course Director: Prof. Dr. Asma Abdullah

Duration of training: 6 months-9 months

Training Centre: UKM Medical Centre/ Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, Cheras 56000 Kuala Lumpur.

FELLOWSHIP

Candidate who is planning to spend 6-9 months may choose to  Clinical fellowship position. This candidate would generally be experienced in ORL having completed their training in their home country. The  candidate english language skills need to be sufficient.

General objective is to provide Malaysia or other countries with competent Neuro-Otologist that not only have excellent knowledge and attitude but also have excellent communication skills.

Eligibility:

  • Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Surgeon from local or oversea that accredited by MQA
  • At least 3 years’ experience as general ORL-HNS Surgeon
  • Successful interview via Skype/zoom meeting /video call

Neuro-Otology & Lateral Skull base Fellowship Program:

The candidate needs,

  • to learn the basic pathophysiology of Cholesteatoma, Mastoiditis, infective and non- infective cause of hearing loss, acoustic neuroma.
  • to understand the management of otology and neuro –otology disease.
  • to perform common head and neck oncology surgery.
  • to learn varies techniques of mastoid surgeries, tympanoplasty and implant surgeries ( Baha implant and cochlear implantation ).
  • to assist major operation such as paraganglioma operation and acoustic neuroma operation.

Activities/Task:

  1. Candidate is required to perform all clinical activities as specialist i.e. run clinics, do ward rounds.  The supervisor will determine whether the candidate can be on call independently or he or she will do on call with supervisor
  2. Candidate must attend X ray conference and cochlear implant meeting.  He or she must participate actively during this activities
  3. Candidate must pass the viva examination which will be held at the first month and end of the programme.  The feedback of their performance will be given immediately.
  4. Candidate need to do active learning and grab the opportunity to write manuscript within this program.
  5. Candidate must send at least 1 manuscript in a WOS journal within 6 months or 2 manuscripts within 9 months fellowship.
  6. Candidates must know the case that posted to surgery and assist as many cases as possible in operation room.
  7. All her/his activities must be recorded in the log book. This log book will be showed to supervisor every 2 months in order to see the progress.
  8. The assessment is also including the communication skills and professional personal development.

Certificate of completion of training certified by Course Director and Dean, Faculty of Medicine UKM will be given to the successful candidates.

*** The candidate who has attitude problems and not up to the standard will be called to meet the supervisor and Head of Department.  The advice will be given  few times but despite of warning letter, the candidate not showed any improvement, this candidate will be terminated.

1. Please apply at least 6 months before intended start date.

2.  Three references ( Senior ORL- HNS Surgeon. One Neuro-Otologist and the Head of Department)  are required.

You will need Temporary Practicing Certificate (TPC) by Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). https://mmc.gov.my/

Application for TPC will be forwarded to MMC by UKM except for Letter of Good Standing

Application through Secretariat of Postgraduate Studies (SPS) website/ link at HCTM website/ or direct communication with the Course Director *Application need to be made a minimum of 6 months before the date of admission

*First medical degree needs to be checked whether it is recognised by Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) (a mandatory requirement if the candidate will do rotation outside of HCTM) An offer letter will be issued (by UKMSHAPE) to the candidate for the payment process Course Director

Application will be reviewed by the Course Director

  • Fill in and submit Application Form to International Affairs Unit (UPA)
  • Letter of Temporary Approval/ Letter of Rejection to applicants will be issued by SPS
  • For the accepted candidates, a copy of the Temporary Approval Letter will be sent to UKM Shape – for VISA’s application process

Accepted candidates are required to complete the following documents:

  • *Since Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysian Immigration will only issued Professional Visit Pass (PVP) with Single Entry Visa for 1 Year. Candidate must go out from Malaysia before PVP expired and must re-apply new PVP from home country for next year's programme
    *All documents will be sent through the International Affairs Unit, Faculty of Medicine UKM
Step 5
Candidate enrolled and report to the Course Director
Step 6
An offer letter will be issued (by UKM Shape) to the candidate for the payment process
Step 7
Course Director will notify the candidate about privileging and credentialing to HCTM Credentialing Link
Step 8
ONE (1) month before programme ends, the Course Director are required to inform SPS and International Affairs Unit, Faculty of Medicine UKM
Finish
SPS will issue Certificate of Completion to the candidate

DEFINITION

Credentialing: a process to set the standards and to do an evaluation for a person’s qualification in a field or procedure. It is recognition for the professional training done by a medical practitioner.

Privileges: the rights given by the hospital for a medical practitioner to give treatments or to do procedures on hospital patients based on the qualifications of the training, and the medical practitioner’s experience and expertise.

For new application, please fill in the details and update your profile.

* If you want to renew you application, please apply 6 months BEFORE your expiry date.

Click Credentialing Form and complete all the required information.

*You need to fill in your Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) Registration Number, Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) Number and National Specialist Register (NSR) Number in the prerequisite field.
Step 4
Select Head of Department (HOD) to verify your application.
Step 5
Tick (√) and submit your application.
Step 6
Your Dashboard for the application status will appear. You can check the ongoing status by time to time.
Step 7
All applications will be reviewed in a meeting.

*The meeting will be conducted 4 times a year

HCTM issue an Approval Letter (TWO weeks after the meeting)
