Secretariat of Postgraduate Studies - Faculty of Medicine

There are two modes provided in this programme Research Mode and Mixed Mode.

Research mode programme is conducted primarily through research works under supervision by academic faculty members to produce a full thesis at the end of the programme. It is a broad-based postgraduate degree designed to allow students to pursue research topics in a range of areas and disciplines within the scope of Medical Science. The research mode enables candidates to acquire the ability to think analytically and have a good understanding of his/her chosen field of study.

The mixed mode programme spans a study period of two years, and the objectives of the respective course is achieved by both coursework and dissertation. The main aim of both programmes is to produce graduates of the highest calibre, knowledgeable, professional, ethical with the ability to develop life-long learning attitudes.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Bachelor degree from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia or from any other university recognized by the university Senate; OR
  2. Other relevant professional qualifications or experience recognized as equivalent by the university Senate; AND
  3. Minimum 3 years experience as a qualified nursing staff with at least 6 months in specialty (for candidate applying Masters in Nursing only); AND
  4. International students must have proficiency in spoken and written English with IELTS ≥ Band 6.5 or MUET ≥ Band 4 or TOEFL iBT ≥ 79 or Pearson Test of English ≥ 63 or Cambridge English Qualifications and Test ≥ 176 taken within the last two years prior to application; AND
  5.  All international and self-financed applicants must produce an accepted written proof of financial status either in a form of an active bank/financial institution statement or accepted letter of guarantee.

Master

General Requirements : 

  1. Bachelor degree in pure science, applied science or professionals from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM); OR
  2. Bachelor degree in pure science, applied science or professionals from other universities that is recognized by the Senate of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM); OR
  3. Those with bachelor degree in other fields of studies will be considered for enrolment if they have work experience relevant to the specialization; AND
  4. Local and international candidates must apply through the Centre for Academic Management UKM and Centre for Educational Extension, UKM respectively; AND
  5. Candidates screened for acceptance into the progamme, must possess a CGPA of 2.67 and above (or equivalent) from recognised universities or experience deemed fit for admission into the programme; AND
  6. For international candidates must also submit proof of proficiency in spoken and written english. An eligible candidate must have IELTS ≥ Band 6.0 or MUET ≥ Band 4 or TOEFL iBT ≥ 60 or Pearson Test of English ≥ 59 or Cambridge English Qualifications and Test ≥ 169 (with proof) taken within the last two years prior to application; AND
  7. Must also show proof of good financial standing for the entire period of the course. Candidates must have their own medical protection and health insurance policy cover.

  2. Other relevant professional qualifications or experience recognized as equivalent by the Senate; AND
  3. Local and international candidates must apply through the Centre for Academic Management UKM and Centre for Educational Extension, UKM respectively; AND
  4. Must also show proof of good financial standing for the entire period of the course. Candidates must have their own medical protection and health insurance policy cover.
  • Programme Structure

    Students enrolled in research mode will spend most of their time on research activities. For students in the mixed mode programme, the programme is designed such that in the first year, students are able to gain further knowledge by attending lecture-based modules. At the end of the first year, students are encouraged to identify and discuss potential projects for the research component and to meet up with supervisors. Students would begin their laboratory-based work as soon as possible at the beginning of the second year. All students are required to complete the ‘Research Methodology’ course in the beginning of the study. The Bahasa Melayu language course is compulsory for all international students.

  • Supervision

    Students will be supervised by appointed academic members of the faculty. Applicants are required to approach potential supervisors with matched research interest before applying for the study. Information regarding potential supervisors can be found at the faculty’s Secretariat of Research and Innovation website or the respective departmental websites.

  • Graduation Requirement

    Students are required to complete the following criteria in order to be considered for graduation :

    1. Published 1 WOS indexed article;
    2. Completed compulsory courses;
    3. Research Methodology course for all students;
    4. Bahasa Melayu language course for all international students;
    5. Passed viva exam and submitted revised thesis;
    6. Presentation of research findings: at least one conference.
