Design, build and commission a wind tunnel

Design, build and commission our own wind tunnel is a large project. It started in April 2013 and is expected to complete in March 2015. A lot of the faculty staff is involved, they are from the Department of Mechanical and Materials and the department of Civil and Structure, the Faculty of Engineering Built Environment. Final year students and research students have been involved in the project. Upon successful commission, the wind tunnel would be able to perform for experiments with velocity up to 30 m/s with test section 3.0 m (length) x 0.5 m (height) x 1.0 m (width). The wind tunnel is an open-return type, powered by 18 kW motor-fan. It has a variable speed drive (VSD) capability i.e. air velocity could be control using programming codes.

The wind tunnel has already have its own 2 axis traversing system, a particle image velocimetry (PIV) and bunch of delicate equipment such as hotwire anemometry, pitot-tube-pressure transducer, temperature, room humidity and barometric pressure sensor. We built our own hotwire repair bench, therefore we could run experiments at controlled or at most of desired sensor diameters and lengths.

LaTeX for journal submission and thesis GayaUKM©

GayaUKM© is a LATEX class for authoring theses that fullfill formatting specifications required by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Malaysia. Why LaTeX? Many reputable journals prefer manuscripts to be prepared and submitted using LaTeX to ensure consistent adherence to formatting requirements. UKM through its Pusat Pengajian Siswazah (PPS) – or the Centre for Graduate Studies therefore feels that a LaTeX class and guidelines for authoring theses is necessary to promote general document authoring using LaTeX.

Air conditioning and ventilation for the passenger halls, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and JB Sentral

Working as a design engineer with Macroworks (2002-2003) and Gerbang Perdana  (2003-2007) for the Gerbang Selatan Bersepadu (GSB) Project gave me access to insights of air-conditioning systems in large halls and underground facilities where typical fire department specifications do not apply. Large halls exceeding 1000m3 require different fire protection system than a typical space because for example a sprinkler system do not work in a triple volume height. Furthermore, simulations are usually required by the fire department to ensure that the ventilation and fire protection systems work. In the event of fire, in the worst case scenario, occupants must be able to find their ways out while ventilation system extracts harmful gases from ‘air-traps’ in high levels of a floor.

The Malaysian Professional Engineer programme

The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) is a statutory body constituted under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 with perpetual succession and a common seal. It was formed in 23rd August 1972. BEM falls within the ambit of responsibility of the Minister of Works. Vested with wide powers, the Minister may suspend the operation of the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 (REA 1967) in any part of Malaysia by notification in the gazette. The appointment of the Board Members and the Registrar is made by the Minister. Its primary role is to facilitate the registration of engineers and regulate the professional conduct and practice of registered engineers in order to safeguard the safety and interest of the public.

The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) was established in 1959 and its primary function is to promote and advance the science and profession of engineering in any or all of its disciplines and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas related to engineering. The governing body of the IEM is the Council, headed by the President. The affairs of the Council are carried out by the Executive Committee.

The award and registration of a professional engineer is under the purview of BEM, however BEM no longer handles the selections, examinations and other related procedures. These are handled by IEM. The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment has appointed myself to review the procedures for staff to become one and ensure compliance with the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) requirement, with regards to professional engineering. The EAC is a delegated body by BEM as the only recognized accrediting body for engineering degree programmes offered in the nation.
