Master of Dental Science (MDSc)

Programme Summary

Master of Dental Science (MDSc) is a research mode programme, which leads to a dissertation writing (not more than 60, 000 words) and oral examination. Students are required to present their research findings in scientific conferences and to publish journal article. Students are required to attend two (2) core courses i) Research Methods & Biostatistics, and ii) Professionalism & Informatics with the aim to enhance their knowledge and skills in conducting research.

Duration of Program

 

  • Full-time: Minimum 4 semesters, maximum 6 semesters
  • Part-time: Minimum 6 semesters, maximum 10 semesters

Basic Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or equivalent in related field with minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.00 or its equivalent from UKM or any institution of higher learning recognised by the Senate; or
  • Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree or an equivalent degree from UKM or any institution of higher learning recognised by the Senate; or
  • Bachelor’s degree with CGPA between 2.50 to 2.99 and fulfil at least one criterion as follows; or
  • At least 1 year of working/research experience in related field
  • Has produced academic publications in related field
  • A UKM graduate
  • Bachelor’s degree with CGPA between 2.00 to 2.49 and fulfil at least one criterion as follows;
  • At least 5 years of working/research experience in related field
  • Has produced academic publications in related field
  • Pass the interview conducted by the Faculty
  • Other requirements set by the University Senate, as stipulated in the UKM Regulations (Graduate Studies) 2021
  • For international candidates, English language proficiency test score of minimum for Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is 550 (paper-based, PBT) or 80 (internet-based, iBT) or 213 (computer-based, CBT); Band 6.0 for International English Language Testing System (IELTS); Band 4 for Malaysian University English Test (MUET); Pearson Test of English (PTE – Academic) is 51; Cambridge English Qualifications is 160. The result must still be in its validity period by the time of application.

Application

  • Applicants are advised to communicate with the potential supervisor(s) prior to application for a higher chance of acceptance.
  • Applicants are required to submit a brief research proposal which they intend to carry out.
  • The proposal should contain no more than 1,000 words comprising of field of research, topic of research, problem statement, research objectives, methodology, research significance and references.
