{"id":3441,"date":"2025-07-17T15:20:57","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T07:20:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/beritaukm\/?p=3441"},"modified":"2025-11-13T09:35:27","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T01:35:27","slug":"early-dietary-changes-may-extend-lifespan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/beritaukm\/early-dietary-changes-may-extend-lifespan\/","title":{"rendered":"Early Dietary Changes May Extend Lifespan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Faculty of Medicine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The timing of adopting healthy eating habits could be as crucial as the type of food consumed in determining lifespan, according to a new study by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Published in Experimental Gerontology, the study shows that beginning a mild dietary restriction (DR) shortly after the body completes its growth phase can significantly prolong life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research, led by Associate Professor Dr. Goon Jo Aan from the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, UKM, involved the use of <em>Caenorhabditis elegans<\/em>, a microscopic worm commonly used in aging studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings revealed that worms placed on a calorie-restricted diet in early adulthood lived 35 percent longer compared to those that ate freely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYoung worms placed on a calorie-restricted diet lived far longer than their counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOlder worms, however, didn\u2019t benefit from the regime, proving that timing matters. This finding shines a spotlight on the body\u2019s \u2018cellular clock\u2019, which seems more responsive and adaptable at a younger age,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that many individuals tend to adopt healthy eating habits only later in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the study suggests that the body is more receptive to dietary changes at an earlier stage, possibly even before any visible signs of aging appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWaiting too long to start restricting your diet may mean missing the window of maximum benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA few mindful changes to your eating habits especially earlier in life could be a game changer for your long-term health and vitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhether you\u2019re in your 20s or encouraging your teens to eat better, this is a wake-up call from science. Begin healthy habits soon after reaching full physical maturity, eat smart, and extend your healthspan,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that the study identified several key biological pathways that mediate the lifespan-extending effects of dietary restriction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA central mechanism is the downregulation of the mTOR pathway, which shifts the body from growth mode to repair mode by reducing protein synthesis and activating autophagy, the process by which cells clear out damaged components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn addition, DR also promotes the use of fats over glucose as an energy source.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMetabolomic data revealed significant reductions in amino acids such as leucine, tyrosine, and methionine, which further suppress mTOR signalling and promote autophagy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe decline of regulators of methylation and inflammation suggests DR promotes a metabolic shift toward enhanced cellular maintenance, detoxification, and stress resistance, all of which contribute to improved healthspan and extended lifespan,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Goon added that although the study was conducted in worms, the underlying biological mechanisms, especially nutrient-sensing pathways like mTOR, and insulin signalling, are conserved in humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis means the findings could also apply to humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn fact, diets that moderately reduce calories, or those that limit protein or specific amino acids (like methionine and leucine), are already being explored for their anti-ageing effects in people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study, titled &#8220;Elucidating the Effective Age for Dietary Restriction and the Key Metabolites Involved,&#8221; was published in Experimental Gerontology in June 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"925\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/beritaukm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Dr-Goon-925x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/beritaukm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Dr-Goon-925x1024.jpeg 925w, https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/beritaukm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Dr-Goon-271x300.jpeg 271w, https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/beritaukm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Dr-Goon-768x850.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/beritaukm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Dr-Goon.jpeg 976w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 925px) 100vw, 925px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Associate Professor Dr. Goon Jo Aan<br>Department of Biochemistry<br>Faculty of Medicine, UKM<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Faculty of Medicine The timing of adopting healthy eating habits could be as crucial as the type of food consumed in determining lifespan, according to a new study by&hellip; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":123457,"featured_media":3993,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3441","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-bahasa-inggeris"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
