The long term aim is to establish the capacity in terms of human resources, expertise\u00a0 and facilities in UKM to cater for the biotechnology industry in Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>The main objectives of the group are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To develop expertise and human capital in the scale-up and downstream processing aspects for production of bioproducts<\/li>\n<li>To demonstrate through design and pilot facilities, the integration of upstream and downstream processing in biotechnology industry<\/li>\n<li>To commercialize UKM bioproducts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>RESEARCH FOCUS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The research focus covers the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bioreactor \u2013 Substrate formulation, optimization, product characterization, hydrodynamic study, kinetic and modeling.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Separation and purification \u2013 Process development in Membranes, Aqueous two-phase extraction, Supercritical Fluid Extraction and Crystallization, Chromatography and Membrane Chromatography<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Process optimization and economic assessment of bioprocess engineering<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>ROAD MAP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Towards achieving the group objectives, the following phases of implementation are proposed:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phase 1 (2008-2011)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Capacity development with model solutions\n<ul>\n<li>Enzymes &#8211; Cutinase, protease<\/li>\n<li>Natural Products &#8211; Polygonum minus (kesum) \u2013 natural aldehydes<\/li>\n<li>Solvents &#8211; ABE<\/li>\n<li>Food ingredients \u2013 gelatine, hydrolysed collagen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Development of Methods\n<ul>\n<li>Bioreactor \u2013 Substrate formulation, optimization, product characterization<\/li>\n<li>Downstream Processing \u2013\n<ul>\n<li>Membranes \u2013 Ultrafiltration, Nanofiltration and Reverse Osmosis<\/li>\n<li>Aqueous two-phase extraction System (ATPS)<\/li>\n<li>Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE)<\/li>\n<li>Others &#8211; and Crystallization, Chromatography, Spray drying, ion exchange<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Phase 2 (2012-2014)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>System integration\n<ul>\n<li>Bioreactor design and production<\/li>\n<li>Hydrodynamic study for scale-up<\/li>\n<li>Downstream \u2013 primary and intermediate recovery and final purification<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Process modelling and economics\n<ul>\n<li>Optimization and simulation of large scale enzymatic production<\/li>\n<li>Process analysis and economics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Phase 3 (2015-2018)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Patenting of processes<\/li>\n<li>External funding \u2013 Technofund, CRDF\n<ul>\n<li>Scale-up<\/li>\n<li>Pilot plant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Commercialization\n<ul>\n<li>Industry partner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Figure 1 shows the road map of the group research focus for the next 5 years until 2015.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1006\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ukm.my\/cespro\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/cespro\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture1.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/cespro\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture1-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Industrial Collaboration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The group is collaborating with a few companies among them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sime Darby R&amp;D \u2013 In 2011, Sime Darby Foundation has grant UKM an Endowment worth RM 15 million to establish the Professorial Chair for Zero-Waste Technology for Palm Oil Industry. Under the Chair, several thrust areas have been agreed upon for collaboration between UKM and Sime Darby. The thrust areas in which the group members are participating are: (i) Hydrogen production from biomass, (ii) Pretreatment for hydrogen production, and (iii) water recycle and re-use.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Halagel (M) Sdn Bhd \u2013 Halagel has been the main industry partner in the Technofund grant obtained from MOA amounting to 3.6 million. The collaboration has resulted in the establishment of a pilot plant for production of halal gelatin.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Altus Technology Sdn Bhd \u2013 Altus Technology is a spin-off company formed under UKM Technology Sdn Bhd to further commercialize the technology for production of halal gelatin and hydrolysed collagen.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mewah Oils Sdn Bhd, Klang \u2013 The collaboration has been on the development of Supercitical Fluid Extraction system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Prof. Dato&#8217; Ir.
