Advancing Sustainability in Structural Engineering and Construction
The field of structural engineering is rapidly evolving to address the dual demands of infrastructure resilience and environmental sustainability. This special session aims to showcase cutting-edge research in structural analysis, performance monitoring, hazard mitigation, and innovative material development. With a focus on both traditional challenges—such as seismic and wind loading—and emerging concerns like carbon reduction and material reuse, the session fosters a holistic approach to the future of structural engineering.
Abstract:
The IJSSD Symposium 2026 organized under the guidance of International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics provides a forum for academics, professional structural and construction engineers, researchers and graduate students working in Asia and the Pacific region to present recent advances in research and developments on structural stability and dynamics. The IJSSD symposium will have a number of technical sessions that will cover a broad range of topics given below:
Abstract:
Significant efforts have been devoted to system identification of civil engineering structures utilizing measured dynamic data, which includes modal identification, model updating, model class selection and structural damage detection. Due to the problems of modeling error, measurement noise and incomplete measurement, the results of system identification are uncertain in nature. The main purpose of this special session is to review the state-of-the-art methods for identifying the systems and quantifying the associated uncertainties of large-scale civil engineering structures following the Bayesian approaches. This symposium covers the theoretical formulation, algorithmic development, numerical and experimental case studies, modal identification using field test data, model updating, force or traffic load identification, damage detection of civil engineering structures following the Bayesian approaches. Possible topics include but not limited to:
Abstract:
This special session highlights recent advances, innovations, and interdisciplinary research in structural and construction engineering. It aims to unite researchers, engineers, and industry professionals to exchange insights on the design, performance, and management of modern structural systems. Areas of interest include structural behavior and analysis, innovative and sustainable construction materials, geotechnical–structural interaction, fluid-structure interaction, mechanical aspects influencing structural integrity, and experimental or computational approaches to failure analysis. The session also welcomes contributions related to construction management, project planning, and implementation strategies that enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in engineering practice. By integrating knowledge across structural design, materials science, construction engineering, management, and failure diagnostics, this session seeks to foster holistic and forward-thinking solutions for the challenges of modern infrastructure development.
Abstract:
The 12th IStructE Asia Pacific Symposium on Engineering for a Resilient and Sustainable Future brings together engineers, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore how structural engineering can respond to the growing challenges of climate change, urbanisation, natural hazards, and ageing infrastructure particular in the Asia-Pacific region. The symposium will highlight innovative design approaches, low-carbon and durable materials, performance-based and resilience-driven design, and the use of digital technologies such as BIM and digital twins to enhance sustainability and long-term asset performance. Through technical presentations, case studies, and panel discussions, the event aims to foster regional collaboration and knowledge exchange, reinforcing the profession’s role in delivering safe, resilient, and sustainable infrastructure for future generation.
