Doctor Of Philosophy (RESEARCH MODE – PHD CONSOLIDATION)
This program is in the form of full research. Students can specialize in Accounting, Economics and Management and Entrepreneurship. Other fields related to business such as finance, insurance, international business are also allowed in the study.
Entry requirements
A person wishing to apply for a doctoral program must have the following qualifications:
a) Master’s Degree from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Senate; or
b) other qualifications equivalent to a Master’s Degree or having other qualifications with experience recognized by the Senate; or
c) students who are pursuing a master’s program under subregulation 6 (a) full time at the University and are recommended by the Faculty/Institution Graduate Studies Committee to change status to a doctoral program with the approval of the Dean/Director; or
d) Bachelor’s Degree by obtaining excellent results from the University or any institution of higher learning subject to the determination of the Faculty/Institution and recognition by the Senate; or
e) other qualifications recognized by the Senate obtained through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL); or
f) meet other conditions set by the program (if applicable); and
g) meet the requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
h) Overseas applicants must obtain at least a TOEFL score of 550 or IELTS 6 or take the English Proficiency Test (UKBI) and if he does not pass the level set by the program, the candidate must follow and pass the English Proficiency Module (MKBI) no later than three (3) semesters for the Doctoral Degree program from the date of enrolment into the University.
Type of Registration and Duration of Study
Full time six (6) to twelve (12) semesters)*
Part time – eight (8) to fourteen (14) semesters)*
Students are allowed to apply for extension and are subject to the approval of the University.
* All lectures are conducted on working days.
Program Structure and Courses to be taken
Students only need to pass three courses depending on the field of study. Typically students will take these three courses in the first semester of study. The grade for this course is Pass or Fail only. This course is not graded and there is no Cumulative Grade Point Average.

International Students (Overseas) – Bahasa Malaysia requirements
International students must take and pass courses in Bahasa Malaysia as a requirement for graduation as established UKM. Course details are as follows:

Course offerings by semester
In the first semester, students are recommended to take all three of these courses and have to pass. However, students are also allowed to take TWO courses in the first semester and ONE course in the second semester.
After passing the THREE courses, then students need to appoint a Supervisor (usually in the second semester) in accordance with the field of study.
Proposal defence
Students MUST present a session defending the study proposal. It is usually done after the student has passed the THREE specified courses. Students are strongly encouraged to defend the study proposal in the SECOND or THIRD semester of study.
Typically, students need to prepare a research proposal of around 50 pages containing three chapters, namely the Introduction, Literature Review and Research Methodology.
After passing the session defending the research proposal, then the student can continue the PhD study until it is completed.
Degree / Graduate Awarding Requirements
1. Students must complete and pass all prescribed prerequisite courses.
2. Students need to present and pass the proposal defence.
3. Students must pass the thesis and oral examination (viva voce).
4. Students must publish at least two (2) papers in WOS/ Scopus/ Era/ well-known indexed journals in fields related to Doctor of Philosophy research with the Supervisory Committee recognized by the Graduate Studies Committee.
5. Students must meet other requirements set by the University.
