The Autism Learning Lab was first opened at the Faculty of Education in 2009 with 9 teaching manpower catering to only 15 pupils with autistic features, using allocations from research grants. After 2 years, the lab continued operations using monthly fees on registered pupils to finance operational costs and funding the teachers’ salaries. In May 2018, the Autism Learning Lab was transferred to the Tunas UKM building, which provided opportunities for 48 pupils with special needs for early interventions in a more conducive environment for social, emotional and communication development. The Autism Learning Lab provides early interventions to 42 pupils with special needs between the age of 4 and 9 years old, and the pro-vocational programme to 6 pupils with special needs between 11 and 18 years old. At present, the lab trains 58 pupils with special needs under the supervision of 13 teachers and 1 manager.
The Autism Learning Lab employs the Individual Educational Plan (RPI) to administer learning activities according to the pupils’ needs and execute planned interventions for each pupil. Some of the administered interventions include Self-Management (e.g. toilet drills, teeth brushing), Behavioral Modification (e.g. tantrum, biting) and Pre-Academic (e.g. writing, numeracy and literacy skills) based on the developed modules by the lab. To date, the Autism Learning Lab has produced 7 books where 6 are registered under the Intellectual Property (Copyright), along with 3 modules. One innovation product is also registered under the Intellectual Property (Copyright) while 2 are within the pipeline.
Makmal juga terlibat dengan aktiviti bersama komuniti seperti bengkel latihan keibubapaan samada anjuran Makmal ataupun dijemput sebagai panel atau penceramah khas. Pada 09 April 2018, Makmal Pembelajaran Autisme telah memenangi Anugerah Tanggungjawab Sosial IPT Autisme 2018 dalam Majlis Anugerah Dari Hati ke Hati yang telah dianjurkan oleh Bank Rakyat. Bagi menampung kos perbelanjaan operasi Makmal Pembelajaran Autisme, Fakulti Pendidikan telah menganjurkan program Amal bagi menggumpul dana iaitu Golf Amal Autisme UKM (2015), Golf Amal Autisme UKM (2012) dan Makan Malam Amal Autisme (2011).
