The Doctorate of Higher Education programme aims to extend knowledge and skills among the staff of higher learning institutions in order to improve local institutions to be competitive and at par with other international institutions. This programme is suitable for academic staff and administrators who are with working experiences in the Malaysian higher learning institutions such as public universities, private higher learning institutions, polytechnics, community colleges/public training institutes or other related institutes. It is also suitable for educators with the aspiration to lead and serve in the area of higher education.
This programme is conducted in mixed mode, which comprised of coursework and dissertation. Total credit hours offered are 80 credit. Programme candidates ought to complete 40 credit for coursework and 40 credit for dissertation.

Required courses and research are categorized in the following six (6) blocks:
The programme aims to produce:
Learning outcome for the programme are as follows:
PLO1: To contribute in the form of adaptation from available knowledge, application and interpretation which improves knowledge, community and culture in the field of higher education.
PLO2: To communicate and express comprehensive views, critical in reviewing the literature and synthesize experiments and creative works, as well as contribute new ideas in relation with theories and professional practices in a systematic way in the field of higher education.
PLO3: Menghasilkan penulisan ilmiah yang dinilai dengan standard antarabangsa yang berasaskan penglebaran sempadan dan pendalaman ilmu dalam bidang pendidikan tinggi.
PLO4: To produce concepts, designs and project execution to generate meaningful new knowledge or understanding in the field of higher education.
PLO5: To administer synthesis and innovation at solving problems and related issues in the field of higher education through research.
PLO6: To display discipline, universal moral values and ethics in completing the Doctorate of Higher Education programme.
This program emphasizes on higher education programme or practice which associates theory with professional practice. As such, research findings in Block 5 (Action Research) and 6 (Dissertation) of this programme carry potential at contributing either in the form of adapting available knowledge, or its application, even interpretation, which enhances knowledge, community and culture in the field of higher education. Research ought to place focus on current problems regarding higher education, its practice or present policy, or reformation in higher education, which is currently practised by producing concept, design and project execution for knowledge generating or new meaningful understanding in the field of higher education. Produced academic writing will be evaluated based on international standards, with regards of widening boarders and strengthening knowledge in the field of higher education.
Candidates are allowed to choose one from the two type of dissertation writings, which are:
i) Tesis / Disertasi Standard
•Disertasi mengikut struktur dan format lazim dan perlu memenuhi keperluan penerbitan
• Penulisan di antara 50 000 – 60 000 patah perkataan
OR
ii) Kompilasi makalah jurnal tidak kurang daripada empat (4), dimana dua (2) darinya telah diterbit atau telah diterima untuk penerbitan dalam jurnal Q2/3/4. Kandungan tesis/disertasi kompilasi perlu merangkumi perkara berikut:
1. Pernyataan bahawa tesis/disertasi ditulis mengikut format kompilasi.
2. Senarai penerbitan yang dimasukkan sebagai bab dalam tesis/disertasi.
3. Keseluruhan tesis/disertasi perlu disediakan mengikut format penulisan tesis/disertasi Gaya UKM.
4. Bab Pengenalan – Bab ini memberi pengenalan kepada isu yang dikaji dan perkaitan di antara makalah yang telah diterbitkan bagi memastikan tesis/disertasi dipersembahkan dalam bentuk yang bersepadu.
5. Bab Bahan Penerbitan – Setiap makalah yang telah diterbitkan perlu dipersembahkan sebagai bab berasingan di dalam tesis/disertasi. Abstrak makalah dan maklumat jurnal penerbitan perlu disertakan bagi tesis/disertasi yang ditulis dalam bahasa yang selain dari bahasa penulisan tesis/disertasi.
6. Bab Kesimpulan – Bab ini mensintesis dapatan kajian dan memberi kesimpulan menyeluruh tentang penyelidikan yang telah dijalankan.
7. Rujukan – Senarai rujukan merangkumi rujukan bagi bab Pengenalan dan bab Kesimpulan.
Writing requirements:
• Syarat penulisan bagi disertasi standard ialah:
– 2 indexed journal articles (SCOPUS/ISI/ERA, which are recognized by the Faculty of Education)
OR
1 indexed journal article (SCOPUS/ISI/ERA, which is recognized by the Faculty of Education) AND chooses one of the following publications;
1 article in the following categories:
Journals under UKM Press or Faculty/Institute, OR
Bab dalam Buku diterbitkan oleh penerbit tersenarai dalam Thompson Reuters WoS atau Penerbit UKM atau MAPIM
– Telah diterima untuk penerbitan
– Semua penerbitan wajib ditulis bersama penyelia
• Syarat penulisan bagi disertasi secara kompilasi:
– Bilangan makalah untuk pelajar Kedoktoran tidak kurang daripada empat (4), di mana dua (2) darinya telah diterbit atau telah diterima untuk penerbitan dalam jurnal Q2/3/4.
– Semua penerbitan wajib ditulis bersama penyelia
