Global Collaboration: NNEdPro, UNICEF & UKM Strengthen Public Health and Nutrition Agenda

JOINT WORKSHOP BY NNEDPRO GLOBAL INSTITUTE FOR FOOD, NUTRITION AND HEALTH & UNIVERSITI KEBANGSAAN MALAYSIA (UKM)

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), through the IDEA Centre and the Faculty of Medicine, in collaboration with the NNEdPro Global Institute for Food, Nutrition & Health, successfully organised a workshop entitled “Nutritional Approaches for Preventing Type 2 Diabetes and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) in Malaysia: An Encounter with NNEdPro and UNICEF East Asia Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO).” This initiative was held under the portfolio of the Tuanku Muhriz Chancellor Royal Professorial Chair at UKM, held by Professor Dr. Chim C. Lang.

The esteemed panel included Professor Dr. Sumantra Ray and Helena Trigueiro from the NNEdPro Global Institute, Professor Dr. Norlaila Mustafa from the UKM Faculty of Medicine, and Sanele Nkomani from UNICEF’s East Asia Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO) Nutrition Team. The session was moderated by Professor Dr. Chim C. Lang. Also in attendance were Professor Dr. Nur Azurah Abd Ghani, Manager of the Tuanku Muhriz Chancellor Royal Professorial Chair, and Professor Dr. Poh Bee Koon, Lead of the Advanced Health and Medicine Research Cluster at UKM.

Key discussions centred on systems thinking in nutrition, the ASEAN regional medical nutrition education competency framework, and addressing equity in health access and nutrition education.

The workshop welcomed around 40 participants, both physical and hybrid, including lecturers, postgraduate students, and field experts from government and private agencies such as the Ministry of Health Malaysia, Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM), and Malaysian Association for the Study of Obesity (MASO).

A key outcome of the workshop was the consensus to strengthen nutrition education and research collaboration through multi-stakeholder engagement, while also supporting evidence-based policymaking for the comprehensive prevention of NCDs in Malaysia.
