The purpose is to understand the dynamics of the Asian economies from a comparative and historical standpoint for deducing their implications on the evolution of a global economy. Diversity of Capitalism’s programme emanates from the French theory of Régulation, a broad theoretical frame underlying old and new contributions for providing consistency to a political economy of Capitalisms; with enduring long-term relationships to history, political science, and sociology. This presentation intends to introduce this 40 year-old theory to Malaysian scholars for nurturing a scientific discussion on the diversity of Asian capitalism through the Malaysian case. The speaker propose to take the current Malaysia-China rapprochement as a methodological object to deal with the definition and the characterization of transformation of Malaysian capitalism.

BIODATA

Dr. Elsa Lafaye de Micheaux has been leading the international 2-year MSH-B research Project (Asean versus UE); she teaches regularly in Vietnam (Master Degree, FTU-Rennes 2; JTD 2015, Danang) and is also supervising a PhD that compares the Chinese firm’s strategies in Malaysia and Cambodia. Her own PhD work was on the role of education in Malaysia’s development. The transformations of the Malaysia’s capitalism constitute her central field of research at the intersection of political economy and development studies. Her other major areas of research include the wage nexus i.e. the complex systemic articulation between wage, productivity, labour conditions, and education in an emerging economy embedded within long running policies of racial discrimination.

We look forward to your participation in this seminar.
