Title \u00a0: \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cAre Human Rights Compatible With Islam?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Date : \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a031st<\/sup>\u00a0May 2016 (<\/strong>Tuesday)<\/strong><\/p>\n Time : \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a03.00PM \u2013 5.00PM<\/strong><\/p>\n Venue : \u00a0\u00a0IKMAS Seminar Room, IKMAS UKM<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Presenter<\/em>:<\/p>\n Prof\u00a0Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na`im BIODATA<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Abstract<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n The term \u201chuman rights,\u201d or\u00a0huq\u016bq al-ins\u0101n<\/em>\u00a0in Arabic, has only recently come into common use, as have the analogous terms\u00a0huq\u016bq-i ins\u0101n<\/em>\u00a0in Persian,\u00a0insan haklari<\/em>\u00a0in Turkish, and\u00a0hak asasi manusia<\/em>\u00a0in Bahasa Melayu.\u00a0Yet arguably since the 1970\u2019s there have been mounting demands by many Islamic movements for the enforcement of certain principles of Shari’a as the official law of the state. The struggle to form an \u201cIslamic State\u201d, a state that upholds Shari\u2019a laws, is often framed as a responsibility of the collective Muslim community to free themselves from the domination of the West and their lifestyles.\u00a0This tension between the reality of secular national legal systems on the one hand, and popular demands for the enforcement of Shari’a by the state on the other, forms the general background and context of current debates over the relationship of Islam and the idea of human rights.<\/p>\n At one end of the spectrum, proponents of Islamic state tend to either openly reject the idea of universal human rights as an imperial Western imposition, or engage in an apologia on the incompatibility between Shari’a and human rights.\u00a0But some contemporary Muslim scholars such as Abdolkarim Soroush, Asghar Ali Engineer and Khaled Abou El-Fadl attempted to develop an Islamic framework in support for human rights through a critical examination of Shari’a and calls for\u00a0ijtihad<\/em>\u00a0or independent juridical reasoning and a re-interpretation of the Qur’an and Sunna of the Prophet.<\/p>\n This lecture will address some of the complexities of these debates and will put forward consistent framework of interpretation of Shari\u2019a and its relationship with the notion of human rights.<\/p>\n We look forward to your\u00a0participation\u00a0in this\u00a0seminar.
