{"id":1477,"date":"2016-09-30T01:20:22","date_gmt":"2016-09-30T01:20:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/ikmas\/?post_type=news&#038;p=1477"},"modified":"2016-10-10T07:19:11","modified_gmt":"2016-10-10T07:19:11","slug":"lasa5","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.ukm.my\/ikmas\/news\/lasa5\/","title":{"rendered":"LASA5"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>10th -12th October 2016<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> iKAL @IKMAS<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Centre for Latin American Studies<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Institute of Malaysian and International Studies<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">LASA, first held in December 2008, convened scholars on Latin Americ from Mexico and Southeast<br \/>\nAsia. It was then biannually held in 2010 LASA 2 and 2012 LASA 3. LASA\u2019s growth forges ahead with<br \/>\nthe formation of research groups that integrate Asia and Latin America and the initiation of a<br \/>\nsystematic capacity building of future scholars from both regions. Reciprocity from the Latin<br \/>\nAmerican community in Malaysia and in Latin America continued to grow in a positive manner. This<br \/>\nleads to the convening of LASA 4 in 2014, held for the first time in Latin America \u2013 Mexico. The<br \/>\ntheme of LASA 4 was Understanding Regionalism, Integration and Development. It aims to i) identify<br \/>\nemerging issues related to regionalism, integration and development ii) share experiences on<br \/>\ndevelopment issues in light of the Post 2015 Development Agenda and iii) strengthen existing ties,<br \/>\nand develop new partnership focusing on research between the two regions. This theme is extended<br \/>\nto be the basis for the pursuance of LASA 5 \u2013 \u201cRegional Societal Integration in A Comparative<br \/>\nPerspective \u2013 Latin America and Asia\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>SUB-THEMES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1. Centering Community Development<\/strong><br \/>\nCommunity Development takes into account the role by actors such as the state, community leaders, civil\u00a0society, and youth in the pursuit to develop a community. In an effort to foreground community<br \/>\ndevelopment, one has to question the meaning of development for different communities. Issues<br \/>\nassociated with community empowerment, preservation, advancement of indigenous knowledge and<br \/>\nindigenous peoples and migration can be considered for discussion.<br \/>\n<strong>2. Rethinking Political and Economic Stratagem\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nOver the decades, nations in the two regions have evolved strategies and policies nationally and\u00a0collectively at their respective regional level, to deal with challenges from a world that is fast globalizing.\u00a0Issues of regionalism with particular reference to security, both traditional and non-traditional; approaches\u00a0to conflict resolution; challenges and opportunities to both regions emanating from an evolving\u00a0international order might be explored as potential research topics.<br \/>\n<strong>3. Exploring Sustainable Development Goals<\/strong><br \/>\nThe advancement in technology such as discovering alternative energy sources, increasing food<br \/>\nproduction and advocating good health care, building livable cities can be associated with sustainable<br \/>\ndevelopment for all. The pursuit of development must be balanced with the preservation of local heritage.\u00a0Comparative studies on sustainable development practices can be beneficial in ensuring the rights of\u00a0communities and individuals in fulfilling their potentials are within grasp.<br \/>\n<strong>4. Revisiting Historical Narratives, Cultures and Literary Traditions<\/strong><br \/>\nOne of the conduits to mutually engage the future between Latin America and Asia is through revisiting the\u00a0historical narratives, cultures and literary traditions of these two continents. It defines \u2018culture\u2019; one\u2019s\u00a0understanding of another\u2019s culture and what composites the different cultures.
