List of Speakers and Trainers

  • Dr. Emelda Rosseleena Rohani is currently a fellow researcher at the Institute of Systems Biology (INBIOSIS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). She obtained her Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from Chiba University, Japan, in 2016. She earned a Bachelor’s and Master's degree in Plant Biotechnology from UKM. Her strength is in plant tissue culture studies, involving direct or indirect organogenesis, somatic embryogenesis, cell suspension culture, as well as histology and anatomy analysis. The plant of interest covers tropical plant species such as mangosteen and Garcinia spp., Nepenthes spp. (the carnivorous plant), Nephelium spp. and Citrus spp.

  • Her current research focuses on the papaverine or alkaloids content in Sauropus androgynus or locally known as pucuk manis. She is also currently working on understanding the behaviour of recalcitrant seed and using mangosteen seed as a model study. The findings would perhaps help conserve and store the seeds, thus preserving the country's biodiversity.   • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hamidun Bunawan obtained his PhD and received intensive synthetic biology training at Bristol University, United Kingdom. His research activities have been centred around the investigating range of interconnecting themes that include bioengineering, biotechnology, systems and synthetic biology.

  • His signature project comprises constructing the synthetic virus of Rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV) and Rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV) as a powerful platform to delve deeper into the function of viruses. His research interest also extends to the microbial host’s metabolic engineering, mainly using yeast to produce plant anthocyanin and genetic manipulation of antibiotics produced by Lactobacillus and Trichoderma.
