The Climate Leaders: Leading the Action Against Climate Change program is a leadership and technical learning series that aims to increase the capacity of climate change practitioners in the Southeast Asian region by helping them to transform communities and at the same time address the effects of climate change. The Climate Leaders: Leading the Action Against Climate Change program is an initiative of the Leadership Sustainability Center (AKEPT) and organized by the Institute of Climate Change, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia as one of the commitments in identifying transformations and actions that can be taken to address the major challenges of climate change. This program is designed to shape the university's leadership in strengthening its contribution to the local community and sustainable global community. It will serve as a medium platform to strengthen the university's role in equipping graduates with comprehensive education and understanding the global climate change issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. To strengthen the university's contribution in dealing with the effects and impacts of climate change through local action plans against climate change in Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. To present various strategies to strengthen the university's contribution in overcoming the effects and impacts of climate change, towards shaping the 2030 generation.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. To form and strengthen national, regional and global university networks and knowledge exchange regarding climate change.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. To contribute to the theory and understanding of the impact of higher education on climate change and sustainable development.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Dean, College of Science<\/b><\/p>\n

    President\u2019s Chair in Earth Sciences, Asian School of the Environment Nanyang Technological University, Singapore<\/b><\/p>\n

    Professor Redfern is an Earth scientist, exploring the physics and chemistry of our planet and environment. His work within geosciences spans more than 35 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    He left Cambridge in 2019 to move to NTU and take up the post of President\u2019s Chair in Earth Sciences, alongside the role of Dean of the College of Science.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    He is also the recipient of the European Mineralogical Society\u2019s Medal for Research Excellence and fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America and of the Geological Society of London.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    He was also a member of the UK ministerially-appointed Committee on Radioactive Waste Management charged with providing independent scrutiny of the development of a geological radioactive waste repository in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

    Assoc. Prof. Dr. Seree Supharatid is\u00a0 the Director at Climate Change and Disaster Centre, Rangsit University, Thailand.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Previously, he was Dean, College of Engineering, Rangsit University, a General Director at Sirindhorn International Environmental Park and also a Director General at Provincial Waterwork Authority.<\/span><\/p>\n

    He received his Doctor of Engineering in Hydraulic & coastal Engineering from Tohoku University, Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Currently, he is a lead author of IPCC.<\/span><\/p>\n

    He has been awarded Historical Climate Change, Climate Vulnerability and Climate Change Projection for Thailand, Indian-Asian Green Fund for 2017-2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

    Assistant Professor of Sociology, <\/b>Sociology and Anthropology Department, University Brunei Darusalam<\/b><\/p>\n

    Dr. Meredian Alam is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University Brunei Darusalam (UBD), Brunei.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    He used to be an environmental consultant for Biogas Project in Indonesia and also consultant for Women and Children Welfare - Plan International.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    His key interest in the area of international comparative education specifically situates in the current trend of global environmental education that has become a space for contemporary youth cultures and cultural capital modalities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    His PhD Dissertation \u201cWhen Environment is Ours: Youth Environmentalism\u201d received Research Higher Degree Award (Distinction) from the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    He attained M.Phil in Culture, Environment, and Sustainability from the University of Oslo, Norway and took up research fellowship at the Nordic Institute for Asian Studies (NIAS) at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark to undertake research in comparative biogas development in Nepal, China, India, and Pakistan during his study from 2010-2012.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    He has been awarded University of Newcastle International Research Scholarship from 2014-2017 under Faculty of Education and Arts (FEDUA) Research Fund, The Macquarie University Conference Travel Bursar and The University of Sydney Digital Media Training Scholarship. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

    \"\"<\/td>\nAssociate Professor Dr. Zaini Sakawi<\/b>\n

    Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zaini Sakawi is an established scientist in environmental and waste management focusing on odour measurement and analysis, environmental management, physical geography, environmental impact assessment and social impact assessment<\/span><\/p>\n

    He is the Director of Institute of Climate Change and also a senior lecturer at Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Malaysia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    He received his PhD in 2013 from UKM specializing in Odour Measurements and Analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n

    He is a member of Institute Waste Management, United Kingdom since 2001 and also a member of Global Network for Environmental Science and Technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    He was an evaluator for Environmental Impact Assessment, Social Impact Assessment, a committee for Greenhouses Gas (GHG) for Sisa Buangan Sector and also a technical committee for Climate Change.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
