Zakat is an instrument of social justice in Islam that functions to safeguard societal welfare and to liberate individuals from various forms of oppression. Traditionally, the asnaf al-riq\u0101b refers to slaves seeking emancipation; however, the absence of physical slavery in the contemporary context necessitates a re-examination of its interpretation to ensure relevance to current realities. This study aims to explicate the meaning of al-riq\u0101b from the perspectives of classical (mutaqaddimin) and contemporary (muta\u2019akhkhirin) scholars, as well as to analyse the appropriateness of categorising the homeless as asnaf al-riq\u0101b. Employing a qualitative approach through library research and field study, this research analyses primary and secondary sources related to zakat and al-riq\u0101b. The findings indicate that contemporary scholars have expanded the interpretation of al-riq\u0101b to include modern forms of bondage such as poverty, social problems, and loss of personal freedom, which correspond to the lived realities of the homeless. Therefore, this study concludes that recognising the homeless as asnaf al-riq\u0101b is not justified and not consistent with the objectives of Islamic law (maq\u0101\u1e63id al-shar\u012b\u2018ah) in enhancing a more effective and relevant zakat distribution system.<\/p>\n
