ABSTRACT

Heavy metals content in the soil and vegetables samples obtained from Bangi, Gombak and Sepang were studied. Heavy metals studied include Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu. Soil samples were extracted by sequential extraction method, which extracted heavy metals from easily leachable fraction, acid reducible fraction, organic oxidation fraction and resistant fraction. Wet digestion method was used for extraction of heavy metals in vegetables. The result of the study showed that high concentration of Pb, Cd, and Zn were found in the resistant fraction which were 55.88 mg/kg from Gombak, 4.20 mg/kg from Bangi, 14.64 mg/kg from Sepang and 71.50 mg/kg from Gombak respectively. The concentration of Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu in vegetables were below the maximum levels permitted by the Malaysian Food Act (1983) and Food Regulation (1985) with values of 2.00 mg/kg, 1.00 mg/kg, 30.00 mg/kg and 40.00 mg/kg respectively.
