Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) are targeted for students who are interested in research work and wish to continue their career as researchers or academicians.

Entry requirements

A Master’s degree from The National University of Malaysia or its equivalent from any other recognized university

OR;

Any other qualification that is equivalent to the Master’s degree or experience recognized by the Senate.

OR;

*Candidates who are pursuing their Master’s degree in the University and approved by the Postgraduate Committee of the Faculty to be upgraded to the PhD programme with approval from the Dean.

**A Bachelor degree with first class honours or equivalent and have obtained CGPA of at least 3.67 from The National University of Malaysia or any other institution of higher learning recognized by the Senate and for international candidates, requirements for English Language is minimum 550 (TOEFL) or 6.0 (IELTS).

English Language Requirements

  • Minimum score of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent for any examination that has been aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) as approved by the Senate
  • Letter of confirmation of academic qualification obtained using English as the medium of instruction issued by the University.
  • International students originating from countries that use English as the official language (refer to The International Academic Grade Guide 2nd Edition).
  • Prospective students also have the option to take the HEET exam Higher Education English Test (HEET) as a language competency test Main English aligned to The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) to meet the entry requirements to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

English Language Relaxation Requirements for Nusantara Students

  • Students are required to write their thesis in Malay.

  • Students are required to take the additional Malay Language course LMCR2242 and must pass it in addition to taking the course LMCM1093 (Malay Language for Students Nusantara) as a graduation requirement.

Requirements for Viva Voce

  • Doctor of Philosophy candidates need to fulfil the publication requirement as determined by the Faculty before thesis submission.

  • The course on KKKF6013: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COURSE or KKKF8033: Advanced Research Methodology for Science Social is compulsory for Doctor of Philosophy candidates undertaking thesis/research.

  • Compulsory for International Candidates: Bahasa Melayu Komunikasi Antarabangsa; atau Bahasa Melayu untuk Pelajar Nusantara
