Description:

Dalam kes ini, Laurence Guillemard, Pesuruhjaya Tinggi British membuat kenyataan yang menarik minat penulis untuk membongkar sisi gelap pentadbiran kolonial, iaitu “… the finances of the Federated Malay States now stand is not due as he asserts to “the mistakes of the past….”

This book takes readers on a journey to explore Malaysia’s economic history during the colonial era over 100 years ago. Based on the perspective of neo-mercantilism and historical evidence uncovered in both London and Malaysia, the author proves that economic activities in the Federated Malay States were actually controlled by the British government through colonial administration. The Federated Malay States emerged as one of the richest protectorates in the British Empire, even contributing a warship named H.M.S Malaya. Although the First World War did not take place in Malaya, a trade war between Britain and its enemies, especially Germany, occurred in the Federated Malay States. This book also tells the story of financial mismanagement by colonial administrators amid the economic downturn that followed the war. In this case, Laurence Guillemard, the British High Commissioner, made a statement that caught the author’s interest in uncovering the dark side of colonial administration: “… the finances of the Federated Malay States now stand is not due as he asserts to ‘the mistakes of the past….’”
