Description:
In the late 1990s, the nation was shocked by the dismissal of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which led to the Reformasi movement. Reformasi marked the beginning of a shift in Malaysia’s political culture, witnessing a change in public support patterns as people began to lean toward opposition parties. Additionally, Reformasi became a turning point for youth involvement in politics, whether through participation in the Reformasi movement or direct engagement in Malaysia’s political arena. The youth, in general, were deeply affected by the events in Malaysia, which ultimately altered their perspectives and thought processes. The old political culture began to erode. Although racial politics remained strong, it gradually diminished due to societal changes influenced by urbanisation and economic development. This, in turn, impacted the youth, particularly the middle class. As a result, political discourse became revitalised with debates on economic growth, good governance, the fight against corruption, and more. Consequently, the political culture of Malaysian youth post-Reformasi is seen as more open in discussing economic, political, and social issues.
