Penulisan buku ini bertujuan meneliti proses pembentukan idea bangsa idaman hasil daripada pelaksanaan sistem pendidikan di Malaysia, khususnya di sekolah aliran Melayu dan aliran pendidikan Cina. Buku ini menumpukan kepada tiga perkara utama. Pertama, meneliti fungsi etnisiti selaku realiti sosial dan pengaruhnya kepada penggubalan dasar pendidikan yang berkait rapat terhadap sistem pendidikan vernakular sejak zaman kolonial. Kedua, membahaskan kehendak-kehendak pendidikan etnik Melayu dan bukan Melayu yang mengundang kepada kewujudan berbagai-bagai idea ‘bangsa idaman’. Ketiga, menjelaskan sejauh mana kesan kemunculan berbagai-bagai idea ‘bangsa idaman’ dalam kelompok etnik Melayu dan bukan Melayu terhadap pengekalan sistem pendidikan vernakular. Buku ini turut membincangkan fungsi etnisiti selaku realiti sosial di dalam sistem pendidikan vernakular sejak zaman kolonial. Seterusnya, menganalisa bagaimana etnik Melayu dan etnik bukan Melayu menyatakan kehendak pendidikan yang menzahirkan berbagai-bagai idea ‘bangsa idaman’ dalam keadaan ‘authority-defined’ dan ‘everyday-defined’. Buku ini juga berhasrat untuk menjelaskan kemunculan berbagai-bagai idea ‘bangsa idaman’ dalam kelompok etnik Melayu dan etnik Cina hasil pengalaman mereka di dalam sistem pendidikan vernakular. Walaupun pembangunan sistem pendidikan negara semakin berkembang terutama selepas merdeka, para pengkaji terdahulu didapati lebih tertumpu menjalankan kajian yang menjurus kepada hubungan pencapaian akademik pelajar antara etnik. Terdapat juga pengkaji terdahulu yang telah meneliti fenomena etnisiti dan aliran pendidikan vernakular sebagai satu ‘rujukan pengkategorian’ (categorical reference) berbanding dengan penggunaan etnisiti sebagai ‘alat analisis’. Buku ini berhasrat untuk mengisi kelompangan tersebut dengan meneliti hubungan antara etnisiti dan sistem pendidikan sebagai satu usaha membina ‘field of study’ di negara ini. Justeru itu, adalah penting penelitian untuk memahami impak etnisiti terhadap pendidikan dilaksanakan untuk memahami bagaimana proses keputusan dan polisi berkaitan pendidikan kebangsaan dilaksanakan.
The writing of this book aims to examine the process of shaping the idea of a desired nation as a result of the implementation of the education system in Malaysia, particularly in Malay-stream and Chinese-stream schools. It focuses on three main aspects: first, the function of ethnicity as a social reality and its influence on the formulation of education policies, which have been closely tied to the vernacular education system since the colonial era; second, the educational aspirations of Malays and non-Malays, which have led to the emergence of various ideas of the ‘desired nation’; and third, the extent to which these differing ideas among Malay and non-Malay ethnic groups have influenced the continuation of the vernacular education system. Additionally, this book discusses the role of ethnicity as a social reality within the vernacular education system since colonial times and analyzes how Malays and non-Malays articulate their educational aspirations, leading to the formation of different ideas of the desired nation within ‘authority-defined’ and ‘everyday-defined’ perspectives. It also explains how the experiences of Malay and Chinese ethnic groups in the vernacular education system have shaped their respective visions of the ideal nation. Although Malaysia’s national education system has developed significantly, especially after independence, previous research has largely focused on differences in academic achievement between ethnic groups. Some scholars have studied ethnicity and vernacular education as a ‘categorical reference’ rather than employing ethnicity as an ‘analytical tool.’ This book seeks to bridge that gap by exploring the relationship between ethnicity and the education system as part of an effort to establish a field of study in this country. Therefore, a thorough examination of how ethnicity impacts education is crucial to understanding how national education policies and decisions are formulated.
