ES5 – Student led society whose purpose is to engage with sustainability
At Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), students play a vital role in driving sustainability initiatives through a dedicated student-led society focused on environmental and sustainable development efforts. This society serves as a platform for students passionate about sustainability to collaborate, innovate, and take action on pressing environmental issues.

1. UKM EcoVolunteers Club
The establishment of EcoVolunteers Club started at Kolej Ibu Zain (KIZ) UKM in line with the college’s aspirations to become a sustainable college. This group is growing not only in the college but throughout UKM. EcoVolunteers Club focuses on three aspects of the elements in their movement, namely Knowledge, Community Service and Health. Exposure to knowledge about the environment and its ecosystem is very important for an ecovolunteer’s understanding of the function and role of the environment in our lives. The knowledge gained will be able to be used through a series of volunteering programs with the community in the form of lectures and various other activities to develop the ability to care for the environment. Therefore, all the efforts that have been taken in preserving the environment will be able to create a healthy and prosperous community and environment.

a) Environmental Debate for Higher Learning Institutions
On 28/10/2024, UKM (Universiti KebangsaanMalaysia) became the Champion of the Environmental Debate for Higher Learning Institutions, defeating UIAM (International Islamic University Malaysia) in the 30th edition organized by the Department of Environment Malaysia. UKM also won the Best Debater award in this final competition. The motion was: “Environmental Quality Act 1974 – It takes two hands to clap.” The motion was accepted. It is hoped that this program will continue to empower university students regarding environmental issues in Malaysia and globally.

b) Jom Bersih Bukit Bintang
On 26 October 2024 EcoVolunteers Club had organized Jom Bersih Bukit Bintang as an initiative focused on keeping Bukit Bintang, a popular and bustling area in Kuala Lumpur, clean and well-maintained. The program encourages UKM students to maintain cleanliness and contribute to the local community.

Environment and Green Energy of Malaysia Association – Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (EniGMA-UKM) is a student organisation for undergraduates and postgraduates interested in upholding and spreading awareness on green energy and environmental issues.

a) The Nature Sustainability Tour Program: From young people to the world
7 October 2024, UKM Malaysian Environment and Green Energy Association (EniGMA-UKM) had organized The Nature Sustainability Tour Program: From young people to the world collaboration with Institute of Climate Change, UKM, Ministry of Natural Resources and Nature Sustainability (NRES) in collaboration with the Sultan Mizan Antarctic Research Foundation (YPASM). The Environmental Sustainability Tour Program is an effort involving the youth in dealing with issues involving environmental sustainability. Some activities in this tour program, a natural sustainability dialogue, was also held in Panggung Seni, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia(UKM) Bangi featured YB Minister of Natural Resources and Natural Sustainability as a panel in providing better information to the youth about current issues related to natural sustainability. Besides, Plastic cleaning around Langat River Research Site.

b) Zero Litter Day at Pantai Teluk Kemang, Port Dickson
9 June 2024, UKM Malaysian Environment and Green Energy Association (EniGMA-UKM) had organized Zero Litter Day at Pantai Teluk Kemang, Port Dickson. Zero Litter Day is an initiative dedicated to creating awareness and promoting collective action to combat littering and environmental degradation. This program not only highlights the negative impact of litter on our ecosystems, public health, and urban aesthetics but also underscores the shared responsibility of It encourages small, meaningful actions—such as picking up trash, reducing waste, and adopting eco-friendly habits—that collectively make a big difference.maintaining cleaner surroundings.
c) EniGMA-UKM Virtual Interaction Day
21 February 2024, UKM Malaysian Environment and Green Energy Association (EniGMA-UKM) had organized EniGMA-UKM Virtual Interaction Day. A special event designed to foster connection, collaboration, and inspiration among participants from diverse backgrounds. One of the activities is SDGs Binggo. The SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Bingo game is an engaging way to raise awareness about the 17 SDGs set by the United Nations. It helps students learn about sustainable development goals while having fun and fostering interaction.
3. MYAgrosis UKM
The Myagrosis Club was established to help students interested in the basic agricultural and food industries. This club is directly guided by MARDI and UKM-CESMED. Club members will be given the opportunity to attend courses related to the basic fields of agriculture and food as a guide in running a business.

a) “Train of Trainers” Fermentation Product Processing Technology-Tapai Training Program
On 25 April 2024 MyAgrosis Club collaborated with Mardi to successfully organize the “Train of Trainers” Fermentation Product Processing Technology-Tapai Training Program, at Food Fermentation Laboratory, Mardi Headquarters, Serdang. The program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to harness the power of fermentation in product development and gain practical experience in processing fermentation-based products. Besides, the students will explore innovative approaches to reduce waste and improve efficiency in product processing.

4. Environmental Science Club UKM
The Environmental Science Club is a student-led organization dedicated to promoting environmental awareness, sustainability, and scientific exploration of the natural world. The mission is to inspire individuals to take action in protecting the environment through education, research, and community engagement. The club organizes a variety of activities, including eco-campaigns, clean-up projects, tree-planting initiatives, workshops, field trips, and sustainability talks. Through these efforts, we aim to cultivate a deeper understanding of environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable living.

a) Student Associations Introduction Week (M3P)
On 6-7 November 2024, Environmental Science Club had joined the Student Associations Introduction Week (M3P) at Student Activity Centre UKM. Various exciting activities were carried out, including a “mini game” such as “mini basketball”, a microorganism exhibition, and a variety of interesting information displayed around the booths.
The impact of the program was highly positive, as it successfully attracted student participation and increased awareness about the various student associations available on campus. Through engaging activities such as mini games, exhibitions, and interactive booths, students were able to build connections, foster teamwork, and enhance their understanding of academic and co-curricular opportunities. The program also helped to promote a vibrant and inclusive campus culture, encouraging more active involvement in student-led initiatives.

5. Environmental Health Club UKM
The Environmental Health Club UKM is a student-led organization at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) dedicated to promoting environmental health awareness, sustainability, and public well-being. The mission is to bridge the connection between the environment and human health by educating, advocating, and taking action to address environmental challenges that impact our daily lives.
The club organizes various activities such as environmental health campaigns, clean-up projects, workshops, research discussions, field trips, and community outreach programs. Our focus areas include air and water quality, waste management, food safety, climate change, and disease prevention—all crucial aspects of environmental health.

On 22 June 2024, Environmental Health Club UKM had organized the Community Health Awareness Program 2024 (Program Intai Komuniti Sihat 2024) at Gugusan Rosa Apartments, Kota Damansara. The program featured activities such as a community clean-up (gotong-royong) and interactive sessions with residents at Gugusan Rosa Apartments, Kota Damansara. It made a significant impact by encouraging students to embrace social responsibility and volunteerism through direct participation. This joint effort not only enhanced ties between the university and the local community but also promoted mutual respect and a sense of unity. Moreover, the initiative helped raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness and maintaining a healthy environment within the community.

6. Social Environmental and Development Sustainability Research (SEEDS) Student Club
SEEDS Student Club is a group of Student Club of the Center Social Environmental and Development Sustainability Research (SEEDS) at UKM. The club is dedicated to advancing sustainability through a holistic approach that integrates social well-being, environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The mission is to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to engage in sustainability-related initiatives. Through research, community outreach, workshops, eco-projects, and sustainability dialogues, we aim to create a meaningful impact in addressing global challenges such as climate change, social inequality, resource management, and sustainable urban development.

a) Beach Clean-Up Expedition 5.0
On June 8, 2024, SEEDS Student Club organized the Beach Clean-Up Expedition 5.0 program at Pantai Cahaya Negeri, Port Dickson. The program had a significant impact on both the participants and the environment. It promoted environmental awareness and responsibility among students, encouraging active participation in preserving and protecting coastal ecosystems. By engaging in the clean-up efforts at Pantai Cahaya Negeri, participants contributed directly to improving the local environment while fostering a sense of community and teamwork. The initiative also helped strengthen the relationship between the university and the surrounding community, demonstrating a shared commitment to environmental sustainability. Moreover, it raised public awareness about the importance of maintaining clean beaches and the role everyone plays in preserving natural resources.

7. Earth and Space Science Graduate Association (ESSA-UKM)
Earth and Space Science Graduate Association (ESSA-UKM) are a group of student community mainly from Institute of Climate Change, UKM and collaboratives with other members from FST and FTSM. The Earth and Space Science Graduate Association (ESSA-UKM) is dedicated to promoting awareness, education, and engagement in the field of Earth sciences. As a platform for aspiring geologists, environmentalists, and earth science enthusiasts, ESSA organizes a variety of activities, including field trips, workshops, seminars, research projects, and outreach programs. Through these initiatives, we aim to equip students with knowledge, practical skills, and networking opportunities essential for their academic and professional growth.

a) Climate Fresk Workshop
24 July 2024, Earth and Space Science Graduate Association (ESSA-UKM) has been organizing The Climate Fresk Workshop EOC, IPI, UKM. The Climate Fresk is a French nonprofit organization founded in December 2018 whose aim is to raise public awareness about climate change. It proposes a collaborative serious game based on 42 cards where the participants draw a fresco, hence “fresk”, which summarizes the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
The Climate Fresk Workshop is an interactive and educational experience designed to teach participants about the complexities of climate change in a fun, engaging, and hands-on way. The workshop uses a collaborative card game to break down the scientific theory of climate change into easily understandable concepts, making it accessible for people of all backgrounds, regardless of their prior knowledge.

8. Friends of Garden Club (Kelab Rakan Taman)
The Friends of Garden Club (Kelab Rakan Taman) is a student-driven organization at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) dedicated to promoting environmental conservation, sustainability, and community engagement within campus green spaces and beyond. The club is to cultivate a deep appreciation for nature by organizing tree-planting initiatives, park clean-ups, educational workshops, and eco-friendly recreational activities. Through these efforts, we aim to create a greener, healthier, and more sustainable environment for UKM students and the surrounding community.
