English Literacy Camp

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LITERACY CAMP:
Empowering Marginalised Orang Asli Temuan Children and Youths
through Literacy for Social Inclusion, Mobility and Integration 2019
In 2018, the Institute of Ethnic Studies (KITA), UKM and its main collaborator, the Dyslexia Association of Sarawak (DASwk), organised two one-week literacy camps for Bahasa Melayu (BM) held at a venue outside the children’s village to ensure full and continuous attendance. The name of this literacy camp was “Empowerment of Children and Youths of the Orang Asli Temuan community for Social Inclusion and Mobility”. The first literacy camp (Camp 1.0 BM) was held from 16-22 March 2018 at Kem PLKN Millennium, Beranang, Selangor (National Service Training Camp). The second literacy camp (Camp 2.0 BM) was held from 18-24 August 2018 at Kolej Dato Onn, UKM Bangi, Selangor.
These camps, conducted in stay-in and away-from-home format, aimed to provide an intensive and immersive environment for the mastery of reading and writing in BM among the targeted children and youths. These camps ensured 100% attendance. The methodology used for these BM camps is foniks*PINTAR – a structured, systematic, phonics-based and multi-sensorial instructional program in BM. Even though these literacy camps were meant for Orang Asli Temuan children and youths, a few Malay, Chinese and Indian children also joined these BM camps.
This year, 2019, the team will be organising the third literacy camp (Camp 3.0 English) for the Orang Asli Temuan children and youths who attended Camps 1.0 BM and 2.0 BM in 2018. This Camp 3.0 came about as a result of overwhelming request from the student-participants of Camp 2.0!
This third camp is an English Literacy Camp and will be held from 12-18 August, at Kolej Keris Mas, UKM Bangi. The methodology used for this camp is SMARTER*phonics – a structured, systematic, phonics-based and multi-sensorial instructional program for English language. Camp 3.0 will also have a multi-ethnic participation – Orang Asli Temuan, Indians, Malays and Chinese.
The organising team of KITA-UKM and DASwk would like to express its heartfelt thanks, gratitude and appreciation to all the funders – The Edge KL Rat Race 2017 (2018), Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Kuala Lumpur (2019) and Minister of National Unity and Social Well-being, Prime Minister’s Department (2019); our supporters – Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli [JAKOA], Multimedia University Melaka, Kem PLKN Millennium, Beranang, Selangor, Kolej Dato Onn, UKM Bangi, Kolej Keris Mas, UKM Bangi, Tok Batins and all parents and children from participating Orang Asli villages as well as donors, facilitators and helpers.
