In this paper, I present a refinement of the Islamization of knowledge project. I argue that it is important to make some rigorous distinctions between several different modes of knowledge, and to integrate two forms of Islamic knowledge at crucial points in the process of Islamization. Social science cases are used to demonstrate this approach. Finally, this refined approach presents Muslim activists with a practical tool for the transformation of current social, economic, and political realities into an Islamic ecosystem.<\/p>\n
Salim T.P. Daniels<\/strong> is Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Anthropology at Hofstra University. Before joining the faculty at Hofstra, he completed his Ph.D. in cultural anthropology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He teaches anthropology, religious studies, linguistic anthropology, and urban studies. His research has spanned multiple field sites and topics in Malaysia and Indonesia. Building Cultural Nationalism: Identity, Representation, and Citizenship, his first book, investigated interreligious and interracial relations. His is most recent ethnography, Living Sharia: Law and Practice in Malaysia (University of Washington Press, 2017), analyzes the role sharia plays in sociopolitical dynamics.
